So I do most of my heat treating in house the old blacksmith way, but I am getting ready to do a short run of knives from 1095 that I would like to get it done in a more precise manner and not have to mess with it myself.

Any recommendations as to a good heat treating service that deals with knives but doesn't charge an arm and a leg?

Thanks,
Greebe

I deal with Peters Heat Treat at my day job. A great company to deal with. Jamie will be able to answer any questions you have.

Ill rec Delbert Ealy. I dunno how he does it but they always turn out awesome.

You could also check with local jr colleges etc that have a machine tool technology program. (MACHINIST, TOOL AND DIE MAKER, destructive and non destructive metal testing courses) The good ones usually have good heat treating gear. Striking up a metal composition converstaion , heat treat etc might get them to do a batch for a class in reference teaching purposes etc and possibly free 2 boot and maybe more acess. WHen I was in college we had a sweet heat treating machine, rockwell hardness tester and really nice microscopes not to mention lates, surface grinders, milling machines, CNC etc. I only wish I had done more side projects before I switched majors or before I gave up my job as the Lab assistant for the entire program. I even used to be able to go into lab and get permission to use all the fun toys after grad, just explaning I was the former lab tech. I wish I still had that hook up, I miss all the big toys, plus I'd love to make a knife. It is really starting to intrigue me.
