I'm travelling to Chicago from Canada on business and would love to drop in to a good knife shop. Any sugestions? SOmething not too far from downtown would be best, but I'd be willing to travel.

Thanks

I live in the far South suburbs of Chicago, and the best place around here to buy knives is the INTERNET! Chicago has some backwards gun laws, and so the knife shoppers suffer from the lack of gun shops.

Although they are not cheap, MegaSports in Plainfield does have a huge selection of tactical knives-at least a few hundred models on display. Full retail (Ouch!) though...

Corrado Cutlery

I have never been there, but this store has a downtown location. Check their website link for location and contact info. And I believe Chicago has a 2.5" blade length limit, but I am not positive. But it is a fun city anyway, lots of touristy stuff to do.

Chicago does have a 2.5" blade limit. State law is 3.0". Anything over is considered a "dangerous weapon".

Mega Sports in Plainfield is the place to go for a great selection, but the prices are`nt too great.

Hey Larry, where do you live? I live like an hour from the Mega Sports and I find the better deals in knives to be accross the street at The Gun Shop - those guys are great! Terrific service and good prices, unfortunately because they are small they don't carry all that many knives.

chicago SUCKS. i agree, use the internet if you are unlucky enough to live here. you have to go WAY out in the burbs, like over an hour away to find ANYTHING. Corrado, a) not only did they charge OVER retail on EVERYTHING i ever saw in their downtown location (but they did have a lot of Spydercos and Benchmandes), they b) recently stopped selling everything but razors, scissors and dining sets. i guess they got scared after 9-11. yeah, chicago is backwards as hell. highest murder rate, and the answer is even MORE gun laws. i feel scared when i carry my Mnandi, hopefully i won't get arrested for having it. do yourself a favor and just stay away. buy from the 'net like i do.

Hey, thanks everybody. I agree that the best deals are usually on the net, but it is nice to "shop" somewhere real before you buy in cyberspace. Tho' occasionally I find a decent deal (with no shipping costs) or can't delay gratification long enough to wait until I get home and the order arrives (but I'm sure that only ever happens to me) 8^) .

John at The Gun Shop is a great guy to deal with although the knife selection is kind of small- Spyderco and a couple of Emersons.

Actually, it looks like they've taken the 3" definition out of the state law. It's now ambiguous. After 9/11, I guess they learned you don't need 3".

In ILCS 5/24-1, the offense of "unlawful use of weapons" (as pertaining to otherwise legal knives) is defined as:

(2) Carries or possesses with intent to use the same unlawfully against another, a dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto, broken bottle or other piece of glass, stun gun or taser or any other dangerous or deadly weapon or instrument of like character

So the key factor has always been intent, rather than the blade length. Without intent, carrying a knife of any size does not violate state law. With intent, a piece of broken glass violates it.

I work a block away from corrado cutlery, downtown, 1/2 block south of City Hall. They have some production knives & a few custom knives, small sheath knives and nice ron Lake-sytyle interframe folders. The staff (at least one of the guys) is a knowledgeable knife-nut, fun to talk to. but they are pricey and don't have a large selection.

there is another place just west of The Loop, as central downtown is called, around 800 W. Lake, called I believe Northwestern Cutlery. (You can take the green line elevated train, or just walk under the elevated tracks on Lake Street from downtown, cross over the highway, look for the BBQ hovel on your left, then scope the small warehouses to your right). They have a really good selection of all kinds of production knives, and a staff that isn't super-knowledgeable but they are helpful & enthusiastic. Lots of fun toys to play with there!! They used to have a few custom knives, but not so much anymore. If you need kitchen knives, that is their specialty. They sharpen for professional cooks.

If you are going to be downtown, those are the 2 places I know of. Gun shops have knives too, but those bad bad establishments are forbidden in "the city that works." I'd suggest Northwest for a fun visit.

NOTE: While the Municipal Code of Chicago restricts carry-knife size to 2.5", 2.0" if 18 or under, that doesn't prevent knife shops from selling every type of knife (But as noted you should avoid carrying a "billy, dagger, stilletto or dirk," which the state dislikes but doesn't take the trouble to define).

When I was an LEO in Illinois, I was taught that no knife (except an automatic) was illegal to carry unless the person demonstrated "intent to use it unlawfully against another."

They said 'intent' should be threats, either verbal or physical.

On a couple of occasions, we hooked people up for wearing knives and acting 'goofy'-(one guy wore a full camo outfit and a Gerber BMF strapped to his leg to the local mall.) But these arrests were for disorderly conduct, since Illinois' Unlawful Use of Weapon charge wouldn't cover the knife.
