A friend of mine has lost a knife that his father left to him, a Camillus "Monroe Hardware" advertising knife 1971 or 1975 version (he wasn't sure). He asked me if I knew where he might be able to acquire a replacement. I was wondering if there are any Camillus collector groups or companies that may be able to help him out. Though I have a number of Camillus knives, I am no expert in them and would appreciate any help.

I would recommend going to ebay and searching " Monroe Hardware Camillus" and you can save your search. So anytime if ever one comes up it will send you an email about the knife. you can make the search last 6 months, 1 year or even longer. its been a great way for me to find hard to find stuff I was looking for. just one suggestion but maybe someone else can help ya a little more.- Joel

But is it REALLY a Camillus??? ;)

It says "American Made" 1998??

I did find some references to the 1971 version on ebay
But the listings were too old to list
Do like Gradall said and save it as a favorite search
I had never heard of these knives
Did they make them every year? with a diff year stamp??

I looked in ebay; but, did not save my search. That's a good idea. I talked to the people at Monroe Hardware, in NC. They did not have any idea other than ebay. I even contacted the last person who sold one, last July, on ebay. I'll eventually find one; but, I came across this Forum site and it looked too good to pass on.

Personally, I have several Camillus knives in my collection, including a small bone handled pen knife that my Grandfather carried until his death in 1961 at the age of 80.

Yes - they were made by Camillus. Also made the same knife for Smith Hardware and one other whose name escapes me. Different year stamp each year.

Camillus made the Monroe Hdwe. knives (model #1955C) since the late 1940's.

Mr. Jimmy Doolin was the buyer for Monroe and he placed the order every year for Monroe Hdwe., Smith Hdwe. and Mitchel-Powers Hdwe.

There is currently one up on eFlea as BIN ending 9/26/08. Beware that the auction title (Cammillus Knive Monroe Hdwre) conflicts with photos which are of Smith Hdwre ad knife. Probably an oversight on part of seller. Good luck.
