Where to start?

I would really like to get into knife-making, the thing is, I have no idea where to start. Do I just need to read up on the subject a lot (which I have been doing), do I need to be an apprentice for some time (I don;t know any knifemakers), or do I just buy what I need and keep trying to do what all the different knifemaking tutorials tell me until I start to get it? I know a fair amount about knives and steels, but I'm not too good at other things, like sharpening (I've only ever tried with a stone, never rods, files, or sandpaper.), and using a file for stock removal. I just cant keep the dang file at a constant and even angle!!! I would like to start out making fixed blades with blades under 5 inches, using a steel that is good for beginers. (I heard that 1095 was good for beginers.) Are there any books that any of you would like to recomend? Thanks all!

You are starting right by reading knife making books.
1095 is a good steel, but 1084 is a little easier to start on.
The bigger and longer the file, the easier it is to keep it straight.
There are several good books and tutorials on sharpening. The key to all sharpening is keeping the angle consistent and at the proper angle for the blade use.

When i first started i read a book called Knifecraft by Sid Latham it has step by step instructions by famous makers Jack Barnett, George Herron, LLoyd Hale, and Bill Moran.
The internet was not a part of life fo me then. If you can find the book it is a great resource. And i still made the ugliest knife you ever seen. With everything practice makes you better i still use the book as a reference. Today we have the forums and the help of many makers to help solve our problems. Good luck and give it a go!

You obviously have the desire, what you need now is the KNOWLEDGE this is the reason many of us are here, because it is such a great place to get the lnowledge you need. What you need right now though is basic knowledge and for that I would suggest the book from David Boye(I get all the titles mixed up but if you search you will find it) or the book $50 knife shop by Wayne Goddard
Good luck
