Where would I post an open request for a custom knife?

Here is the deal, I would like for someone to make a knife for me to my specs. Where would I post this kind of request? I know I could email individual knifemakers and ask, but that might get very cumbersome. I think it would be easier for me to post my specs and what I would be willing to pay and whoever is interested could contact me. How does that sound?

I would be patient in hanging around here a bit noticing particular maker's work to see which tend to make the general style or type knife you are interesting in. Get a copy of "Knives 2008" to see which makers interest you.

Just because you give specifications to a maker doesn't necessarily mean you will get just the knife you want.

What general style are you interested in?

Before you get a knife made, do as much research as possible to find out which makers you are interested in. Along with the recommendations that kevein gave you, I would also suggest that you go over to the knifemaker forums here on Bladeforums and check out the for sale and gallery forums.

I have bought lots of knives off of the maker forums. I am just a bit impatient. I figured posting the specs and the price might be more efficient. If a couple makers say they would do it, I could check their styles and pick one (or more) of them to do the job.

I am looking for something very simple. Just a small 3 inch bladed double edged dagger with a cross guard. Nothing fancy.

That sounds JUST like something Martin knives makes.
Good prices too.
Here's one that's just one I have:

Here's a blown up pic, from their website:

The fit and finish on these are really great. They can do a lot of different customization options as well.
(IMO.... the choils are too big on that one, it would be my request to make them much smaller for starters.)

I would imagine, a fine custom made knife is rarely a by product of impatience by either collector or maker. ;) :)

You should post your request and specs at the Knifemakers Shop Talk forum. You might get a few guys who are willing to do it. Also take a look at the work of "shadowknives". He's a member here and has done some very nice lookign double edge daggers.
