Hi, everyone. I registered on Bladeforums a while ago, but never really got to participate much. I've been looking for a Fiddleback Forge 12" machete for some time, but all the dealers listed on the Fiddleback Forge website seem to be out of them. Is it a discontinued item or just hard to find? Thanks for any help.

Getting a Fiddleback Forge 12" machete is a combination of luck and timing...I started about 6 months ago looking for one and came close a couple of times..I missed the first day that the Thread Machetes for sale appeared (1-27-16) and missed out, finely I came by one by accident so it is possible...luck and timing..

I spoke to somebody at FBF the other day, they said they automated the process, so it will be more available. They also pointed me to the dealers that were about to receive a batch of them, and I was able to pre-order one. I'd say getting in touch with them helps a lot.

We have started a major machete push, and have changed a bit about what we are doing and what the delivered product will be. This will definitely make it easier to get the best machetes in the world. We have had the handle scales shaped by Nathan the Machinist just like we do the production scales. This will ensure that we can afford to make the machetes, and that they are more consistently shaped. We are fastening the handles with flared tubing rather than glue and pins. This will make it tougher. We never had a handle pop off, but we have had to weep glue back into machetes that have popped the glue joint as they flexed. That won't happen anymore. Finally we have found and now provide an AMERICAN Made sheath with the machetes.

So, Im curious. What're pros and cons of 12 vs 16"? Is there a consensus winner here?

Tanks Tom

I got the 12" from Dale at TKC. It's an awesome looking blade, comfy handles and a solid sheath. Takes a wicked edge. Planning on taking it out on Saturday, we'll see how it performs.

I doubt there will be a consensus winner. I don't own a 16" and I just got the 12", so I'm not an expert on them, but my guess would be that the 16" is more like a traditional Latin machete while the 12" is more like a big knife. When I say big knife, I don't mean a monster like BK-9, Junglas, RTAK or some of the Condor machetes. It's a thin stocked, well balanced, super light, and very comfortable large blade with a swift swing and a lot of control.

I love the 12" machete...I have carried the Ontario 12" on a number of canoe trips and have backpacked with it, even took it to Costa Rica with me. To me its an ideal size ( the Fiddleback is what 11 1/2, 3/4 inches) easy to pack and I have never needed anything bigger...I agree with muradtexas..big knife or little machete it's in my go bag.

Was bouncing websites last night and Whitty at USA Made Blade had them in stock and he ships fast.

They are no longer in stock at USA Made Blade. But there are a few 16"ers left at The Knife Connection. I grabbed one because I wanted one with a bullseye lanyard.
