A thread about the extents to which a RC-4 can be used. It is a thread for me to determine which RC-x to buy, but disguised as a reference thread for all...My uses are just to bring with me in the woods, and defend me from whatever Florida animal is around... Oh and whittle wood and just general camp use. It may come with me to Yosemite though...

RAT Pack #335

The real question is, where WOULDN'T I take it? I love my RC-4 and and it's the perfect all around knife for me so I always take it when I can.

I love my RC-4 and it goes everywhere I go, BUT it travels in my day pack. I don't wear it on my person. When i get my RP knife, that will ride on my belt everywhere. As much as i hate to admit it, I think that the RC-4 is just slightly too bulky to ride on the belt everywhere and the RC-3 is perfect. The only reason that I had not previously purchased an RC-3 was because i had the RC-4 and just couldn't justify (with the money situation these days) purchasing another RC knife that was so similar without some special circumstances. Now that there are RP RC-3's, I had reason that outweighed the money situation. I am foregoing quite a few packs of Ramen noodles for these knives. If you want the best all around pack knife that can also be worn when in the bush, go with the RC-4. If you want the knife that you can wear 24/7 and still be one of the most useful knives you'll ever own, go with the RC-3. These are just my opinions.

I see the RC4 in the size grouping of a perfect belt knife for camping chores, outdoor whatevers....to me a belt knife is 3.5"-5"max & the RC4 for me is perfect size both blade & handle & weight. Hard to beat the RC4.

My RC-4 is tough to not to include, being equally at home on my belt or molle gear. Or pack. But being a city dweller, it's hard to justify wearing it daily. The people at Walmart frown on it as I'm checking for the elusive "cheap" (like there is such a thing anymore!) handgun ammo. So I tuck a BM or Spydie instead!
You won't be unhappy no matter what Rat you buy.

I have an RC-4 and wear it on my belt when I'm out camping or hunting.

It makes a GREAT belt knife in my opinion!

the rc-4 can be used for anything (a knife can do). just picked one up the other day very impressed though i don't think i will get another with serrations! (they work great just not me). heavy enough to chop, thick enough to be comfortable and damn sharp. oh yeah and i bring the thing everyware, not too many real rules in fl.

I agree with DYD and Dylside. The -4 is my favorite knife by far - perfect length, balance, weight and utility, but too big for the belt in the city. I also carry a BM or Spydie Millie on my person and the -4 is relegated to the daypack. In my hip pouch rides a CRK Prof Soldier, as my -4 is even too long for that. perhaps its time to buy a larger hip pouch.

You can't go wrong with the 4!That said,I've grown quite fond of my 3.I like its compact size and thinner blade, more and more.

RC-3 is my favorite. For more of a one knife solution the 4 is a really awesome knife too. The 6 is the epitome of a great camp knife IMO, and is not too heavy to carry either. I'm sure this doesn't make your decision any easier, but I hope it is somewhat helpful :o

I can not wait until I get my RC4 in and get a chance to use it even if it is in my back yard chopping an old piece of wood or out and about in the woods if I can find a good spot in central Tejas here.

Nice! You're gonna love the RC-4. It's not much of a chopper though. Even the 6 doesn't chop very well. I'd save your choppin' for the RC-10 (soon to be renamed). Now that is gonna be a choppin' machine :thumbup:
