Where would you suggest buying a CRK from?

Hello all!

As I have posted before I plan on buying a large 21 Sebenza this summer as I will be out of school and working again (yay money)! I was curious about a few things...Where should I buy a CRK from? I was thinking BladeHQ as I have no real knife of sports stores that will sell CRK Sebenzas. Also, if I do purchase from BladeHQ will I receive a "Birth-date card" that is relatively close to the time I ordered? I guess it shouldn't matter, but I would prefer to have a knife that was made somewhat close to the time I purchase it, rather than receive a knife that is a couple years older. Do you guys have any wisdom on the matter? Thanks a bunch!

Gpknives or knifecenter. I like gpknives more, better pictures and sebenza selection. I bought mine in store going across country on I70

You can always order direct from CRK and it will go out right after it is built. I don't know what their backlog time is, but you can call them and I am sure they will accommodate you as best they can. I would call soon if you decide to do this.

Yea I probably will do that, I just hope I get it before summer's end as I have to go back to Ithaca NY and of course I'd want to bring my new Sebenza with me! Maybe I will give them a call tomorrow or Monday, after I talk to my boss and let him know I'm coming home. Thanks for the suggestion too, I think its probably what I will do!

Folks sell here all the time. To get a b-day close to when you purchase one will be difficult because the knives are made in batches/lots. It also depends what model you're wanting and the demand for it that will dictate when the knife was made. You can look on the CRK website for a list of dealers and see if any are close to you. If not, you can order from the dealers to get the latest made knife.
I waited 4 months to get one from a dealer, as stated earlier you may want to order directly from CRK. Keep looking on the different dealer sites to see what is out of stock and that will give you an idea of what models are in the greatest demand. I just bought a left handed Wilson Combat Umnumzaan that was over a year old and the right handed zaans were out of stock. Some knives move faster and that's what you want to be aware of since you want a close to purchase date

Do you know if they collect payment once the knife is completed, or before they begin making the knife? I know on the website it said they are backed up 3-6 months for Sebenzas and Mnandis. If he collects payment once its done then I would definitely like to order one now, or else I'd like to wait until I have it all in order to get one

I'd say here on the exchange, USN cove, another forum or ebay. In that order :) if you're patient you can score a large 21 for around $300. Even if it's beat up you can send it in and it'll be like new.

Payment is up front for any work I know, not sure if knife orders are the same?

They told me a couple months ago that the backlog was about 3 months and payment was due when it's ready to ship.

FWIW, the last Sebenza I bought was from my local shop a couple months ago. I chose between 3 of the same model all with summer of 2012 dates in the old packaging and most every knife on display was in the old boxes so they were all made prior to July 2013 or so. The date didn't matter to me because it was perfect and hand picked by me. They even threw in a tube of CRK grease (woot) to make up for it not coming in the old boxes. That particular Sebenza had the not so satiny stonewash they used to do so I viewed that as a plus of being older.

To answer your question, any reputable dealer or forum member in the exchange.

If you want a user, I would buy off the exchange here. Edgeworks was very accommodating and sent me pics of the born on cards for the two "Safe Queen" knives I was choosing between and shipped same day. They were also very open about the background of one of the knives.

Thank you! I think I will call the CRK number on Monday and confirm when payment is due and hopefully place my order. If its in 3 months i'll be in good shape. I think I may go with the Gold Leaf 21, or the CF inlay Large 21. Haven't decided yet though!

I haven't ordered in awhile , but they took a credit card, but did not charge it until completion.
Mine was a custom order with special features-they may not even need a card or deposit on something standard, but that would be up to them.

There are lots of CRK dealers out there to buy from, especially if your relatively new to CRK and do not know what to look for as fakes on ebay and such. There are many Main Dealers that most go to though and there is always CRK themselves. If your looking for a specific BD, or something in a specific range, I would suggest CRK themselves. Otherwise, its the luck of the draw. I have bought new CRK from dealers that were a month old and some that were years old. Just depends on how fast they move from certain dealers.

I've been looking at buying from a Knife Art. They have a great selection of CRK. I usually buy from GPKnives or Knifeworks. But the selection of CRK at Knife Art is pretty huge.

Has anyone here bought from Knife Art ?
