Where's a good place for collectors to meet?

Not just collectors, but users too.

I like the idea of meeting up with local knife people. My problem is where to suggest a meeting place. Obviously two or more people with big rolls of knives are going to freak out the locals at Starbucks...

Where do you guys meet up?

I have been thinking a meet up would be cool to kind of look at appreciate other peoples knives and show yours too. I was thinking of making a thread for the local area to see if people want to do a meet up. I think a park would be a good place to meet or a County lake. Plenty of room for people and there is enough space to be separated from the local public. Plus parks have plenty of sticks and and other things to cut if anyone wants to test their knives.

The social aspects of forumites is the under explored area. Fans of Ethan Becker knives have been having meets in various parts of the country. They usually involve a weekend, camping, cooking, visiting, knife use activities, woodscraft, and of course food and drink. More along this line could be done. But for the most part, the fourms is where "we meet".

One could start by simply listing the state in which you reside, AddictedtoGear.

I meet lots of knife people at the sharpening booth i setup and work at local livestock & horse shows, I also meet quite a few cool people at the knife store. I have so much stuff going on, 3 kids, school activities, taking care of our dogs/horses, winterizing the house, its very unlikely I would have a weekend, or even one night I could get away to go camping with a bunch of random guys, but a day meet would probably be doable if it were close to home.

Usually, people talk about meeting up here. Seems very popular. ;)

In my other hobbies people throw 'meets' to meet with other hobbyists.

Not sure this hobby works well for meets but you never know.

One option is checking out the local Bass Pro store, they have conference rooms that they let sports oriented groups use. Boy Scouts, knife clubs, fishing clubs. we had our 1st knife club meeting at a Golden Corral so almost all interested folk knew where it was.

A few of us in New Jersey set up the NJKCA -- New Jersey Knife Collectors Association. It is very informal, no dues, no funny hats. it has changed over the years, but still meets once a month.

Ron LaBella has hosted it at JerzeeDevil.com recently, and posts meeting date, time, and location.

What you need to do is find a restaurant that has space and time on a convenient day, like a Saturday or Sunday, and is centrally located for the local knifeknuts.

McDonald's and then we adjourn to the parking lot to compare/sell/trade our new folders.
And. of course we meet here. All day long.

Great suggestions guys. I had actually thought about a park, problem is that I'd worry that a "concerned citizen" might call the po-po. I believe that all of my knives are legal, but I would understand if the scene might draw too much unwanted attention.

Short Story-

A good friend of mine use to make short films. This was around the time of Pulp Fiction. Anyway, him and his girlfriend went to the "old abandoned drive-in", a place fairly secluded, and were shooting a dramatic scene. By the nature of the circumstances a concerned citizen called in the cops. It didn't go well! There was far more drama that he actually caught on film than he had planned on. He didn't get in any trouble, but a group of cops with guns drawn sure taught him a lesson.

I'd prefer to avoid a similar confrontation. :)

In NYC the police department has an office that coordinates with filmmakers. They block off streets for them, divert traffic, whatever they need. Big business, of course, they make sure there's minimal inconvenience for the studio and the neighborhood.

So one day I walk to work, get to the post office across town where I was the manager, and see trucks and equipment all up the block, crowds of people blocking the area, and explode. Two of my supervisors were outside and rushed over to calm me down. "Law and Order " was filming an episode on our street. :)

Great thread. I've been wondering the same thing.

A camping trip would be fun. One could start a "California knife enthusiast camp trip" thread. Maybe put something like "Whether you've been a knife nut for years or just started collecting, come on out and learn, teach, test or just hang out."
I'd be there.

Here in St. Louis, Mo. we have the Gateway Area Knife Club (GAKC). We meet monthly at a union hall. He have 40-50 guys each meeting. I recently put info for the GAKC in my "signature line" and have had 8-10 responses from local knife enthusiast that didn't know such a club existed. It might even be worth it to have a specific forum for knife show info and knife clubs in specific areas. As for places to meet, you might try a VFW hall, union hall, or a church that has meeting facilities.
