Glue a scrap of leather to a wood block. When you sand it makes a nice cushion and helps the paper conform to the shape you are sanding. Also a art eraser works well for this purpose. They work well for satin finishing :]

I guess I'll share, too...if you are worried about slight gaps showing between your scales and tangs on full tang knives, or if you like to drill your holes for pins slightly oversized for better fit, then you can "hide" this by coloring your epoxy. I use Testor's model paint in sparing amounts. Black works great for carbon fiber, black micartas, etc. If you ware using wood or a strange, hard to match color, then you can use the material's dust mixed with the epoxy to tint it pretty close to the color needed.

Okey..here's one!
Make your own wild and wacky handle material at home!
Take 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood 6"X12", & paint one side of each with hot parrafin. Cut some material (blue denim, gunny sack ,old cammy's,etc.) into 4"X11" strips & mix up a batch of heavy duty marine epoxy. Paint each piece thoroughly with the goop, & add layers till it's 1/2" thick. Put on the top piece and clamp down like hell with C clamps (I use a bunch!) & let dry.
Cut into 2"X 5.5" blocks & you've got scales!
