OK, so I found my Uncle Henry yesterday, and decided to give it a spin. I love the Stockman pattern. However, it doesn't say where it's made. I don't know if it's American made or Chinese. I remember seeing some Chinese Old Timers, and I know they were chinese because it said so right on the blade. Do the US ones not say it? What's up with that?

right, but do you want a pre mid 2004 made in the Schrade factory or a post mid 2004 made by Smoky Mountain Knifeworks. i think the answer is in the box they came in: pre = striped blue; post = plain blue.

SMKW is a large retailer for sure. But I've never heard of them making knives. More likely that Uncle Henry would be assembled from the truckloads of parts, after the closing...or made for Taylor LLC, the folks who now own the trademark, in China. If the knife is not identified as U.S.A. like thawk's illustration, it would have been made elsewhere, possibly with a removable decal that specified made in China.

If there is nothing on the tang then maybe it could of been a USA factory second also, sometimes they put a double X over the tang stamp or even ground the tang stamp away completley.

The only writing it has is Uncle Henry Schrade on one side of the main blade, and 834UH on the other. Like I said, I've seen China made Schrades before, and they said China on them. Maybe this IS a Factory second. I don't know. I do know that it is very hard to get an edge on it. The Spey blade was shaving sharp, and the clip was ok. However, the sheepsfoot was dull, and I STILL can't get a good edge on it. Ceramic rods, diamond stone, wet stone.... just doesn;t want to get a good edge. I may just dull it completely and use the sheepsfoot as a spreader or scraper, as I've heard others do with their spey blades. It's just stubborn as all let out.

I think it maybe of Chinese origin, maybe somebody will correct me if I am wrong, this is the way Taylor has marked the model of the new Schrades on the reverse side of the main tang stamp. IIRC only open stock knives from Schrade USA were model marked on the reverse side of the main blade. All USA Uncle Henry knives had tang stamp and model No on the one side.

I think your knife is a Chinese reproduction. All of the original Uncle Henry knives have a "USA" tang stamp. Many of the Chinese Schrade models are stamped China, but some of the early ones (at least in the OT line) were marked with a blade etch that could have easily been buffed off.

It's also possible that your knife was made with a blade that someone forgot to stamp. I haven't seen any like that, but factory errors and blade-mixups were a long standing Schrade tradition.

How long have you had it? Obviously if you've owned it since 2004, it's an original. If you bought it since then from a dealer, it's likely an import.

i think the answer is in the box they came in: pre = striped blue; post = plain blue.
The blue striped boxes were used from 2001 - 2003 and the blue/gray boxes date from 2003-2004. Both are original Schrade packaging designs. The new Taylor packaging is similar, but has "Taylor Brands" marked on the box; the original Schrade boxes have "Imperial Schrade Corp" and the Ellenville NY address.

A scan of the knife markings should provide a difinitive answer.
