Whew! I just went out to move some fence and animals around and all kinds of discussion got going.
...What's "reffing"?...
...Well, if you missed the memo, I did too. I'm not sure where he was coming from, either.
...I thought I must have missed some vast "Kabar conspiracy" theory...
Okay, "reffing": My fingers get tangled when I try to spell "referencing" ...or maybe I meant "referring to". I guess if I were more into sports I'd have realized that most often people would save the verb "reffing" to refer to what a referee does to a game.
And, I was right -- there is a "story" =
KA-BAR History - A Timeline It's a bit disappointing that their timeline did not address the Kabar/Ka-Bar question. The first reference to the name is "Kabar" in the 1920's when they first adopted the "brand". It's then "Ka-Bar" in 1942 when the company submits the design for the famous Marine fighting/utility knife.
Having thought about it some more, I'd be willing to bet that the company studiously avoided the question of whether their brand was correctly "Kabar" or "Ka-Bar" ..or for that matter "Ka-bar". They sort of had three brandnames for the 'price' of one. As long as no other company tried to wheedle in using one of the variations and confuse the customers it was all win-win to be recognized by so many different monickers.
You can see where the name appears to read just "Kabar" there is a funny little typographic whatsit sticking off the left side of the letter "b"s ascender. Could that be a hidden, vestigal "-" hyphen?
Maybe not a conspiracy in the usual sense.
Last, and least, I used to know an old guy, a retired Marine, who just collected the famous Marine knife. He only had a dozen or so, but each one had a "story". As I remember it, all his knives either came from friends or the widows of friends. Bill used to refer to Kabar as "K brand".
Okay! I've eaten my sandwich and cooled off some -- gotta head back out into the sun and switch out the bush hog for the mower deck.
