Just a word of advice to all, a table saw will cut off your finger if you get it in the blade.
I did not lose the whole thing but it is shorter than the rest.

Ouch, Sorry to hear that. I always give table saws an extreme amount of respect.
Mostly because they scare the crap out of me.
I wonder if woodworkers look at what we do and cringe.

So far this is the worst I've done to myself (fall 2009):

And hopefully no more!

I read somewhere that you can use Crazy Glue and glue it back on....at least I think that was what I read? No, that was for broken coffee cup handles,.... never mind.

Please take care and have a speedy healing. Saws scare the crap out of me, and I use them daily.

Ouch man. Sucks loosing the tip of your index finger. Your middle is well suited to taking over, but it will take a while.

The finger guard the doctor put on does not fit very well so i decided to make me one from kydex , if my wife goes to town and i can slip into the shop.

i'm glad it wasnt worse. i have a friend that did the same thing to his middle finger but he lost it to the first joint.

there is a table saw out now that is made to stop the blade if it comes in contact with something soft. i seen it on "this old house" and it worked. a hot dog was used to simulate a finger and the blade was stopped in a flash when it came in contact with the blade.

I have seen that safety saw too. When it does stop the saw it does so, so fast that the blade has to be replaced because it's damaged by the braking process. Small price to pay to save human parts.

OUCH! Heal up quickly!

When I was in school, there was a kid in shop class who lost his balance as he was turing away from a table saw. He wobbled and reached back to catch his balance and set his had right on top of the spinning blade. Luckily, he had just powered it down and it was coasting. Still, it nearly cut his hand in two.

the blade and the aluminum stop itself are destroyed, but it saves fingers. Discover channel did a super slow motion capture of the inventor putting his money where his mouth is, and running his finger into a saw with his sawstop attached, really damn impressive. It's not 'something soft' it's based on conductivity.

Jointers can be bad too. The guy I bought mine from said that his shop class teacher cut the ends off four of his fingers because he wasn't using a push stick.

I made the Kydex sheath to fit over my damaged finger so i can go back to work.
I just wrapped my good finger on the right hand in gauze and made a mold from kydex.

If you use a real thin kerf blade and stick your finger in lengthwise, you can sort of fillet the pad away from the bone. This procedure is painful and has little to recommend it cosmetically, so I only did it once. There is nothing in knifemaking as scary as my power woodworking tools.

Worst I did was try to stop a boat and trailer from rolling into the bumper of the car. Glad to hear you didn't lose the whole finger.

Heal up fast, seems like no matter how careful a person is or isn't -stuff happens -and it happens fast before ya even know ya screwed up!!

I seriously cut myself today buffing a knife, I went into shock and almost passed out. I have broken a bone on at least 12 occassions and this was the worst I have ever went into shock. This was about two hours ago and I still feel nauseous. I feel for you!

This is why I dont cut my own scales any more OR use a buffer. Just not worth it in the end. I'll pay a tad more and order the pre cut wood. Heal fast!!

A bandsaw is pretty safe, if you use a fence and a push stick. I would never use a table saw for cutting scales.
