where's the best place to get inlay wire ?????

Hi Bill,

I think Mike Fitzgerald was recently trying to track some down...you might try contacting him to see what he came up with for options. Then, there's Ron Claiborne, he does inlay work too.

I am having difficulties getting exactly the wire I want. Rio Grande doesn't have the size I wanted (.064x.010"), so I bought .125x.010 and it is way too wide. Earl J spoke with Allan Eldridge and he sent us to Swest in TX. They had the right size, but then called me back to say my special order for "half hard" (they sell it dead soft) couldn't be filled. I bought the soft stuff and am going to try and harden it based on info I dug up on the web that 600F for a half hour will do that. I'll post back here if it works w/o too much oxidation wrapped in SS foil.

After just a few tries at inlay, I find that having the wire a little stiffer than dead soft is desirable. One can always heat it with a match or lighter and it'll anneal quickly to do the sharpest curves.

If anyone else has a source for wire I would really, really appreciate knowing cuz I've spent enough time searching on the net for this stuff to inlay a Kentucky rifle.:)

BTW, Earl found out that we can order the stuff from a manufacturer in New York, exactly as we want it, but the minimum is 50 oz (about 1300 feet) and the cost would be over $400 (it's about $11.50/oz from Swest). If enough people were interested, perhaps we could make a bulk purchase and share?

Indian Jewelry Supply Co - www.ijsinc.com - has several sizes of flat sterling wire.
There was a thread on this on CKD just a while ago and I think it was Jerry Fisk who recommended cutting sheet into strip the size you wanted.

Thanks, Mike!

I had been to most of those places unsuccessfully, but that Superpure seems like it may be a hit. I have spoken to them on the phone and they are going to get back to me with availability and price. I'm hoping this may be a source! It is difficult to find the right size and hardness both in the same place. :D So I've been told often....

It was Lloyd Hale who suggested cutting the sheet over on CKD. I ordered the thinnest stuff Sheffield has and it's still too thick at 20 thou. Thought it might work, but no go for me at least. It'll make some nice medalliions eventually...

Mike, if you know anyone with a roller, you could thin some of the thicker stock down, and trim to the size needed.
Maybe take it to a local jewelry store and ask them to roll it out for you.

Hi Bill, I bought my wire at this place. Bill Moran told me about it a couple years ago. This is what he said to use. Fine Silver Flat Wire
.013"x.055" soft This is the same wire I gave you at the Hammer-In a few weeks ago. Chris Owens also uses it on his knives. I paid $11.72 per oz. the last time I ordered. Good Luck.

The price was 13.50 per ounce and they have a 25 dollar minimum order. they also have Gold and platinum as well as solder and tools for making jewelry. here is the contact info:
