I'm looking at getting a Doug Ritter folder.... No sub-forum for benchmade... where's the lovers? I'd like to see some pics and such..

I don't have any pics but I can tell you the Ritter is awesome. I like it more than the regular Grip because of the tall flat grind and the S30V. It does cost more but I think it's worth it.

Here's a fullsize M2 (#162) w/Corian scales:

and here's a mini M2 (#095) with Blue/Black G10 scales:

Will you look at the finish on the Full size Ritter in the first pic! Even that pic doesn't really do it justice.
It's almost iridescent.

If you are a fan of the Griptilian handle, you'll like the Ritter Axis Lock folder. I have two of them, the regular MDP (stonewash finish, full-size) in S30V and the mini version. I like the full-size better, to be sure. I think the Ritter-spec blade was the perfect thing to top off the Griptilian grip.

I want one of these badly but have concerns about the AXIS lock. I have read the forum and some people reporting a broken spring. Is the AXIS lock robust like a framelock in terms of long term reliability? Or am I better off really sticking with a framelock?

Thanks.

Hi minimize -

There is a recent thread here with a poll asking "have you ever had an omega spring break on an axis lock" or something of that nature.

[edit] found the thread link below. [/edit]

The axis lock is robust, reliable and smooth in operation.

No worries at all. The few people who do report broken springs also report that BM is quick to send out a couple of replacement springs.

The only change I made on my mini-grip was to have STR make one of his awesome deep-carry clips. I prefer the deep-carry, personally.

Awesome info! Thanks so much! I guess I will order one now! I have been on the fence because the spring... but between the pics and your post.. I am feeling good about ordering. Appreciate it.

I bought one of the first 710s when the Axis lock was introduced in 1999. I still have it, and I've bought quite a few Axis-lock knives since then. Do springs break? Yeah, occasionally...very rarely. I have twelve years of experience that says it's not an issue. I have never had one break, and I am a compulsive flicker. ;)

BTW, there is a dedicated Benchmade forum sponsored by the manufacturer on a separate site. You'll get plenty of feedback here in "General" though.

Good to know on both counts. Thanks! I am definitely going to order one. I just noticed that Aeromedix no longer carries them.. weird.

ritter grip people, can you explain the differences of the ritter vs a regular ? I see that the blade is less spear-like and has a higher grind, is this why it's prefered ?

It's a modified drop point with more cutting surface in the same blade length, standard steel in the Ritter Grips are S30V with a stonewash finish, as well as a parkerized clip vs the standard black painted clip that the BM556 has.

I can't tell you why it's prefered, both are great knives in my mind. The Ritter Grip is a wholly useable profile and great for cutting purposes, it is my second favorite blade profile, a lot of cutting surface in a small amount of blade length. I really enjoyed the BM556 and look forward to owning another one in the future (I gave the two I had away) but I doubt it'll knock the BM 558 out of my pocket.

Just buy! They are great. And in the weird circumstance that you find yourself not liking them, they sell well too :)

Get two large, two small - different colours obviously. Then start thinking about his fixed blade :D
