hey guys. how would u sharpen a knife using a whetstone? would you use honing oil or just water? thanks guys.

I don't like to use anything, no water or oil. It just makes a mess, and is not needed.

I usually use an Eze-Lap model L to sharpen my pocket knives. I cut off most of the red plastic handle and it fits in the zipper compartment of my wallet. That way I can touch up my knife anywhere, at anytime in a few minutes. Sometimes, I'll finish it off by stropping on the back of my belt.

If I'm at home, I use my old boy scout gray carborundum stone just for yuks sometimes. If I strop it afterward, it still gets hair shaving sharp on that old pocket stone.

I'll 2nd a vote for DRY honing. The next best option, if you'd like to lube the hone a bit, is to use a little dish soap & water mix. The dish soap will break the surface tension of the water, which will then more evenly cover the surface of the hone. The dish soap & water will also keep the swarf in suspension, which will help keep the hone from getting clogged. As a bonus, since the hone is already wet with soap & water, clean-up is a breeze! Just add a little more clean water as needed and scrub & rinse in HOT water (dries more quickly this way).
