I'd like to replace a knife that went missing when I went off to basic training. I remember that it was a Buck 110 and was built like a tank.. extremely tight well fit knife. It was a few years old when it was given to me by my late Uncle in the late 70's. I remember the blade was so hard that it was difficult to sharpen, but that shouldn't be a problem now with the DMT sharpener I have now. What markings etc. should look for?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Check out the thread below for info on 70's era 110 knives.
Read POST 4 from Chicken as it provides various data of intro and a link to the Buck site page that has "vintage" data and markings.

Also, check out the pics of a great assortment of 110 knives through the years from the collection of Mike Kerins:

All of the below (except the signature section) is 70's thru the 1980 year data I got from a cheat sheet put together by Joe Houser of Buck Knives, Inc.
I stole his homework after he gave me a wedgie:

Fourth Version, (2 variations) Blade material 440C
Variation 1. Forged sides, (1970), Left hand stamped BUCK, U.S.A., brass spring holder separate piece, two separate piece butt rivets, 2 brass inlay rivets, brass rocker rivet.
Variation 2. Same as variation 1 above except stainless rocker rivet.

Fifth Version, (2 variations) Blade material 440C
Variation 1. Left hand stamped BUCK, U.S.A., stainless spring holder, two separate piece butt rivets, 2 brass inlay rivets, brass rocker rivet.
Variation 2. (1972) Left hand stamped BUCK, 110, U.S.A., Stainless rocker rivet.

Sixth Version, (2 variations) Blade material 440C
Variation 1. (1974) Left hand stamped BUCK, *110*, U.S.A., stainless rocker rivet and spring holder, 2 brass inlay rivets, no blade bushing. “Non gravity design”.
Variation 2. Same as variation 1 above except 1 front and 2 rear inlay rivets, blade bushing added.

Seventh Version, (1 variation) Blade material 440C
Variation 1. (1980) Left hand stamped BUCK, *110**, U.S.A., stainless rocker rivet and spring holder, one front and two rear inlay rivets. Rocker material changed.

Goose pretty much covered it! Here are pics of my late 70's 110. It's a Sixth Version, Variation 2 made from 1974-1979 I believe. I would think Var 2 would be the later years in that span.

The old ones were a pain to sharpen -- the blades were 440C, I think. I spent a lot of time wearing down carborundum stones with my old 112 (pre-DMT). The current version with 420HC outperformed 400C in CATRA tests, and that is one reason why Buck switched. Also, the new edge profile (I forget what Buck calls it) really works. I think the current version is superior (sentimentality aside).
