Wow,

Thanks again everyone for your help on my "Which AK" post. Now I know I want an 18-inch model. But do I really want the AK? I've looked at the Ganga Ram Special and the WWII and like those too. Maybe I should buy them all :D ! Anywho, I'd like to open the gates to (hopefully) a flood of opinions so that I can be better informed of the differences between the models. So what do you guys think?

Thanks,

Sam Hurley

I probably should (and probaly will :D ) Maybe a better question would have been "if you had to pick up one khuk and get the #$@* outta Dodge, which one would it be"

PS: Is that too many :D 's?

Well....with that last statement, I'd say any AK oe Khukri better than none. I have a 15" BAS and its killer! And it chops damn good and can fir in my Bug out bag...........

blgoode,

Do you subscribe to BLADE magazine too or is bug-out-bag a more common term than I realize?

Sam

I don't know how old you are but, for me, after handling the 21" GS which is too heavy for what I wanted. I think the 18" GS would be in a very good weight range for most any body. For a 11.5" blade my WWII 16.5" gets my nod. :)

Edited to add. The 18" Sirupati is also a very good multi use khuk.

Dang, how quick to you people respond?!?! This is great!!! Oh, Pappy I'm less than a month from being 20 years old and can hold my own (I assume you wanted to know if I was too young to handle a large blade), but from what I've researched, I probably wouldn't want to swing a 21 inch beast around all day no matter how old I am.

I think its a prett ycommon tearm. I have had a bug out bag of some sort since I was about 10. Always try to be a little more prepaired than non..............no one can have every item but a nice Khukri is a good thang to have. Mine stays in my truck most of the time.

It is not a matter of being real fast. Most of the guys on this forum are interested in the khuks and helping any new khuk owner in getting what would be good for him to have. What you really intend to use the khuk for has a lot to do with which one would be the last ditch weapon and tool.:)

Too true Pappy. That seems to be a good synopsis (did I spell that right?) of what I'm looking for...at least for my first khuk. If I had to have one blade, it would be a good khuk, but I don't even have that yet! The ganga is starting to look better to me. Is it beefier than the AK?

Sam

Sam get yourself a BGRS = Baby Ganga Ram Special. To me and several other guys here they cut like a heavier kukri without the weight.
If I can't have a 17"-18" Foxy Folly like I want I would grab my BGRS if I had to bug out.
It's my favorite, even over my 18" AK, for extended work. But much of what you pick depends on your strength, stamina, and just plain stubborness.
When I get as old as Pappy, not to far off, I might prefer my Gelbu Special = GS as well.;)
Any kukri you pick will do the job. Of all the kukri's I have I actually prefer the village models from BirGhorka in the 17"-18" range.
They may not be like the standard fancy HI lineup, but they will work, work hard and last 100 years of hard, hard work. What more does a man need?:D

18" WWII for all-around khuk action, no question. M43 if you want to be stylish.

Everyone should have a BOB, but when the mutants come I'll probably be overwhelmed standing in from of my khuk-basket trying to choose just one (or maybe three).

Yes, BGRS = Baby GRS = 18" GRS
I'd say the BGRS is a little heavy for something you'll need to carry long-term and in an emergency, but I have not actually handled one. I still vote for 18" WWII.

It's a whale of a baby.

After that an AK-18, again if chopping is most important.

Otherwise, I'm keeping my eye on a Chitlangi-18.

If you don't have any khuks, get the 18" AK. I think the AK is sort of the definitive Bir Ghorka blade. As I said in another post, I loved my slender (width) 18" AK. It'll be beefier and more capable than any knife you've probably ever picked up.

My Sher 18" WWII is the favorite workhorse. It chops well, and doesn't seem overly large to tote around in a backpack. The handle is a little disproportionate - longer handle and shorter blade than an 18" AK, but that gives you options to choke up or sit back on the handle, depending on the task.

For a first purchase, I'd limit choices to those two. The Chiruwa AK is also a good candidate. The Sirupati, Gelbu, or Kobra would be a good second purchase if you want to go lighter, or the Baby Ganga Ram if you want to go heavier. And if you have to carry a khuk over long distances, I still love the BAS.

Your best bet is to contact Uncle Bill, let him know what you're looking for - beefy or slender, horn or wood, and just see what shows up. They do find the right home! :D

my 3 cents Cdn, but i'd wholly recommend you look into purchasing a WWII 18" made by Bura.

it's my all around carry and Bura does an incredible job (at least with mine) balancing out weight and manueverability.

My 18 inch AK is quite heavy but very well balanced (trisul-Kami - Shanker?) and outchops everything I can think of (No, I do not own a GRS...). To carry around it would be to heavy for me and I would take along my 16.5" Chiruwa by Bura, a relatvely light 16.5 AK - but as I like the reach of the 18 incers I guess I will get the 18" WWII next, it seems to be the best of many worlds (long but easier than the AK, a fighter and a chopper).

Well, going by this requirement, I think I would choose my 16.5" WWII above my other blades. I love my 18" AK, don't get me wrong, but the WWII is a smaller, lighter, easier to carry, more versatile package than the 18" AK. The AK is an incredible workhorse though. Whichever one you decide on will be both an excellent choice and only the beginning, believe me, I know. I based my first purchase on what was for sale. Seriously, I caught a Gelbu Special blem that Uncle Bill had just posted. I managed to post "MINE" before anyone else, and it was so. :D And it's still one of my favorite blades, plus it makes a great conversation piece. Uncle Bill says it and I believe it's true, that we only think we choose our khuks, the reality is that they choose us. Somehow or other you'll end up with the right one (or one hundred). So don't stress or agonize over your decision, buy with confidence. I'll climb off of my soapbox now. Have fun with your new khuk, whichever one you decide on.
