Trying to decide on a 4in model. Thinking about asking if they can make me a 4in Sable, don't know if they can. Which do you like best? Thanks

My only CRK fixed blade is a Shadow III. I love it, but it's still only two weeks old (if that). I was stuck about whether to go for the Mountaineer-type single guard or the standard double guard, but I eventually went with the standard configuration, mostly just for the cool look. I use it for my EDC now, and it's a great conversation starter. I had a customer just last week from Idaho talking about how much of a knife nut he was, so I pulled out my Shadow (and my small classic Sebenza) and introduced him to Chris Reeve. He was blown away, naturally, and demanded more information. I gave him the website address, and I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that he'll be a CRK owner before long. Knives this good seem to sell themselves.

i have a shadow III, and would like to get a mountaineer II. these seem to be the perfect size for edc.

I have a shadow III also as my edc and LOVE IT. I feel it makes the best
fuzz sticks for my camp fires.

I have a shadow 3 but dot get on with the sheath. Does anyone know where i can get an aftermarket sheath for it? i want something like the blackhawk ADKS but sized for a 4" blade. Any ideas?

Ken, the 4" model is the Sable III. They make a few of them every now and again, and they come up on the Exchange Forums, which is how I got mine. I have an older model with a hexagonal butt cap.

I can't say enough about this knife. If I had a knife for every one of my posts on BF, this would still be my favorite. Just to keep it busy, I use it as my primary kitchen knife. :)

The design is so classic, the Finns developed the same basic knife centuries ago and call it a puukko -- their word for "knife". They go for a sabre grind instead of hollow, but their original handles were barrel-shaped.

Let me be the first to say "It doesn't matter!"

There are basically no differences between the 4" models. No difference in thickenss or tip strength or anything.

ONE NOTE: Don't think that the serrations on the back of the Aviator are an advantage. They're designed to cut through HARD, BRITTLE fiberous materials (specifically fiberglass) and don't do well on much else. I've tried. I own one.

I wouldn't trade my Aviator for anything else because it's MY Aviator (and a limited edition urban camo) and because I don't think it's more or less better than any other.

I say, do a search on Google for all the models, download all the cool photos you can find, put them in a folder on your desktop, and then drool over them for a while.

After two days of that...

Buy the one that turns your crank.

I made the mistake of selling the Sable III that I had to Esav a few years ago. After 3 years of searching I found another. It is my favorite in the 4" range although I have used and enjoyed my Shadow III and would highly recommend it as well. If you move up to the Sable IV you wont be disappointed either.

I have a Shadow III and chose it over the other 4"er's because of the paddle sheath it comes with, (Aviator does too)... it is a well made pair of pants to go with a very well made blade.

That was no mistake !!! :D But I'm glad you found another one.

When Rick sold me the Sable III, he was so unsure about parting with it that he asked me to give him the first shot at it if I ever decided to sell it. I had also picked up an Al Mar/CRK collaboration, which was a Sable IV with a few enhancements. When someone else really needed it, I remembered Rick letting go of the III, so I sent the IV on its way.

These are all great knives, but we have to look out for each other first. There is always another knife.
