Which 710 to buy

Hi there,

I'm planning on replacing my 710 that I lost a couple of years ago. (I've REALLY missed it) I had the SBK but now I'm not sure whether I should get the partially serrated blade or just the normal one.

It'll be my only pocket knife (I'd love to be able to get both but can't afford it). I'd love to hear opinions.

Thanks,

Carlo.

I've been researching the 710 quite a bit and will probably be my next knife purchase.

I think the plain edge vs the partially serrated edge is a personal preference - mine being the plain edge. But, the partially serrated edge is only available with the black coating of which I try to stay away from. I use my knives, but like them to also look good. Some folks say a scratched up black coating shows the knife is a user, but to me it just looks bad.

Just my 2 cents.......

it is personal preference...and if you have a use for the serrated blade...
i ended up going with a plain edge satin, like it so much that ended up getting a second one...

Plain edge thanks. There a lot of opinions; plain vs. serrated. All by itself D2 is toothy and I find my satin, not coated, non-serrated please, EDC 710 sharp enough for my tasks.

I have to agree it's purely personal preference and ones needs.

When I was on ships and cut a lot of lines and other rough materials I liked having the serrations to help start the cut. Also I wasn't in a position to sharpen my blades often and appreciated the extended amount of time the serrations stayed sharp. Being in a saltwater environment I also found a coated blade preferable, at least until the coating started to wear off from use. I agree it looks terrible.

Now retired and on land with much different cutting needs I prefer an uncoated plain edge. Much easier to sharpen and I think just looks better.

So, like I said it really is up to you and what your cutting needs are. For most engaged in normal cutting tasks a plain edge is probably preferable. You can't really go wrong either way so get what you want.

Best of luck!

Benchmade 710 plain edge in M390 would be my choice if you can find one.

Well, I went in to buy the 710 but wound up getting the 943bk. I couldn't belive how big the 710 was. I sure didn't remember it being that big!

When I got home I discovered that the knfe I had was the 705 which was discontinued. I had a hard time deciding between the two but once I realized I had had the 705 I was happy I went with the 943.

Now I just have to break it in. It is kind of stiff.

Thank you all for your opinions.

Carlo.

Good luck with your BM 943, it is a fine knife for sure.

Geez, I wish the 705 was still around. That was a little before my time, and would buy 5 if they brought them back.

Me too. I would love to own a 705, never had the chance...great knives, but made in far smaller numbers then the 710 was.
