Which AR Optic? ACOG or Eotech?

Well, I'm planning an AR build this year. Spikes lower and upper (was thinking about a Alexander Arms upper but decided not to). And due to the election and other reasons this is going to be one hell of a year getting ARs and AKs, so I'm probably going to be placing the AR order soon just so I can get it sometime after Blade.

BUT....

I haven't made my mind up on an optic. I'm liking the green chevron on the ACOG AT33, but I'm liking the size and 1.5 power of the ACOG TA44 and the new circle dot retice is pretty nice. I shoot with both eyes open and the Eotechs are looking pretty damn good too.

As for Aimpoint, they're a no go. Through our shop we've had to send back a lot of Aimpoints and their service has been kind of slow, so I'd like to stick with Trijicon or Eotech. The Burris Ar332 is iffy, but doubtful and I've heard mixed reviews on the Leupold HAMR.

So, what would you guys use and recommend? Pics would be awesome.

Eotech will be easier and slightly faster to use (and cheaper), but the ACOGs provide magnification and do not require batteries. Purely your preference.

I own 2 Eotechs, an ACOG and an Aimpoint and find the Eotechs easiest to use for quick target acquisition. They've worked for me while shooting poppers on the move out to 300 yards without any difficulty. Using them with both eyes open is useful.

ACOGs look cooler though, IMHO

both of my game guns have Trijicons... my short range scope is a 1.5x16 ACOG with amber triangle...exceptional clarity and brightness... compared to the Bushnell holosight (not Eotech but very similar) possibly a tad slower up close, but the ACOG offers outstanding target identification and outperforms the holosight on anything past 150m...with the fiber optic lit reticle, the 1.5 was my first ACOG with Bindon Aiming Concept (that allows you to track a moving object with a bright dot in the focal plane at 1 power, and then when you stop, your brain makes the decision to allow magnification or not) my other game gun has an older 4x32 ACOG (TA01)... the stadia lines subtend about 19" at indicated distance so allow you to estimate approx 1/2 that or 10" on the upwind side....the stadia lines match my 16" carbine with 55 grain S&B ammo I like to use at large matches....I just obtained a newer 4x32 a TA31 with red chevron... the reticle is less cluttered than the TA01 as the 200m line has been omitted... the top of the chevron is 100, the inside top is 200, bottom of the chevron sides coincides with the top of the vertical line at 300, and the rest is similar, and being fiber optic lit has BAC capabilities... just haven't shot it as much as the older one....they "ain't" cheap, but with a exit pupil diameter (objective lens divided by power) of 8mm, really gather light .... with any ambient light they allow you to see into the shadows... the tritium dot in the TA01 is still slightly visible... it was a private purchase carried in Desert Storm by my friend (retired SF ) in 91...

I try not to half ass things, so when it comes to a $900 ACOG and a $500 Eotech, I look at it the same. So price isn't a major factor since I know it's going to cost no matter what, I'm just in luck that on the higher end ACOGS I can't stand the eye relief.

I don't know if I'm dead set on the ACOG just because they do look cooler (I'll admit, tacticool factor is at a max), but I do love the glass. I like the fact that it requires no batteries, and the tritium is only warrantied for 15 years but I don't intend to be shooting in the pitch black so that's not a huge issue.

I wear glasses, so the Eotech reticles are a tad fuzzy, but I like the wide range a view. More than likely, I'll be shooting this AR at 100 yards or less since I live in the woods and don't have any space for a long range shot, but if I ever do have the chance to shoot 300 yards, I'd like to feel confident that I could (then again, I could use the AR-10 for that). A 3 power magnifier would be great on the Eotech, but after the cost of the magnifier and the mount, I'm looking at an ACOG.

I just don't know.

So CWL, Les........you guys have pictures? Especially of that 1.5x16? :D

M67... sorry I'm an old guy and don't know how to post pictures, if you send me your e-mail thru the notifications, I can attach one... the 1.5x16 has a much more open field of view, than appears by just looking at one....the sides of the scope really disappear in your vision...if you are thinking of more than 200m shots, you might look at one of the 2x scopes... I loose close targets with anything more than 2x, and have a roll over open sight for close targets with the 4x32s

Hmm, only found pics of the EoTechs, one on a M4gery and one on my Daewoo. The ACOG is on a Bushy AR flat top and my Aimpoint sits on the M1A Scout, but I need to take pics of those.

I use these for IDPA 3-gun.

I think you may have answered your own question. If your plan is for the AR to be short range I would definitely recommend the EOTech, I love mine. I tried the 3x and wasn't thrilled, I'll probably sell it. We seem to be thinking along the same lines although I have an M1A in place of your AR10 (kind of wish I'd gone that way, and still may) - put the good glass on that.

I like my AR light and simple and the EOTech just works great - very quick, but still precise when you want to be. I wear glasses, too (progressives, no less) and the EOTech works fine, just take the time to get used to it and play around with the levels.

I dont have a whole lot of experience with higher end optics like this, but I think that what would suit you best would be EOTech with a magnifier, because if you want to use it for shorter range then you just have to swing the magnifier out of the way and there you go....

The ACOG or Eotech is going on the AR15, on the AR10 I have iron sights and a Leupold VXIII 3-9x40 on a quick detatch mount.

As for the ACOG, my initial thought was the 3 power because the eye releif was great and I love the green chevron, but I don't know if I need the 3 power. I'm trying to keep this AR lightweight (considering the AR10 weighs 10 pounds empty). That's why I'm leaning more to the 1.5 power ACOG, it's smaller and more compact, and the circle dot reticle is growing on me and the magnification is just right for short ranges. But, I don't know if I'm leaning towords the ACOG because the "tactical" factor. I want to get the one that suits my needs best and that is bomb proof.

Got any pics :D :D

Thought about that too, but the added weight and bulkiness on top didn't sit too well with me. And after the cost of the magnifier and a good mount for that, I'm around where an ACOG would be. BUT...that option isn't completely off the table.
