Which assisted openers have some ooomph?

I own a few Ken Onion design SpeedSafe knives; a Chive, Scallion and Shallot. They are all great knives, but I've been EDC-ing a Buck Sirus and compared to the Buck ASAP system, the Onions open slowly. I like the steel, and the design on the Kershaws. Are there any of them the open reliably and quickly? The difference was enough for me to put my Onions up for sale.

Have you tried a CRKT Hissatsu or Benchmade Nitrous Stryker?

Though lubing the pivots of your knives is a good recommendation, SpeedSafes just don't open as explosively as those two.

In my experience, (which is with the Tyrade, Leek, Avalanche, Boa, Random Task, both styles of Ti Bump, Chive, Cyclone, and Blur :D ) The Blur was the most positive.

This was my experience as well.
The Blur seems to have more a a "kick" to its opening than the other SpeedSafes.

The 2 Speedsafe models I have that have a bit of "Ooomph" to them have been my Mini Cyclones and my Avalanche ;). Disengaged the "speedsafe" on the Avalanche after it opened in my cargo pocket during a foot pursuit . Take Good Care and Be Safe Always.

God Bless :)

Depends a lot on the looseness or tightness of the pivot pin. I tend to set mine a bit tighter than most folks, but if I set the pivot of my Tyrade just at the point where there is no horizontal play then it rockets out. Where I have it now it comes out but it is not a rocket. I believe you would find this true on all the Kershaw Speed-Safe's.

One of my shallots has a "peach" torsion bar (not a normal one, dunno what is up with this one) and it has RECOIL! It is as fast as my ZT 0610ST which I've slicked up a ton!

Blurs are generally the quickest (hence the name, blur)

I agree that it's partially an issue of the pivot screw tightness, but I also think it's an issue of the different AO mechanisms used by different manufacturers.

I'm happy as long as the knife opens all the way. It's called Assisted Opening, which means the torsion bar helps in opening the blade all the way. AOs are not automatics. If you want your blade to rocket out of the handle then buy an auto. Exactly how hard and fast do you "need" your assisted opening knife to open?

Check out the "Needs Work" (KS1820, ST, BLK). Has a nice Thwack to it when opened.

+1 on the Needs Work. It opens with such a Thwack that everybody in the general area knows that something is going on, even if they don’t know what it is. Very fun knife with a great utility type blade on it. Makes a great user knife I just wish someone would offer after market scales for it. If they did the Needs Work would be my EDC.

You could check with Steve Rice. He might be able to fit different scales, and also change it to a frame lock for you, as well. He's pretty talented.

Okay, that's the one time in your life that you are allowed not to know something. Just don't let it become a habit, or you'll find yourself in public office.
