my boyfriend wants an axe .
so which one should i get him?
He really likes the gransfor bruk axes, but i'm not sure wether to get him the wildlife one or the hunter one?
help... please...

I'd get him the GB Small Forest Ax. It's the same size as the Hunter, but with a square butt. I think it's more useful as a all-around tool. The Wildlife Hatchet is great, too, but smaller than the Small Forest or Hunter.

I only have the Mini, but the Small Forest Axe is the next on my list. Think about how he might want to carry it. If it needs to go inside a pack, I think I'd go with the Wildlife. If it can be strapped to a pack, I'd go with a Small Forest.

Here's something worth noting about the Hunter: "The Hunters axe is made up special for hunters. The poll is forged thinner than normal and gently rounded and burnished to a Flay Poll to be used when skinning an animal. You pull the hide with one hand and at the same time you hit with the Flay Poll of the axe between the hide and the flesh; and stroke by stroke the hide comes off. "

Unless your boyfriend is going to be doing a lot of skinning, I think the Small Forest would be a better axe. As already noted, the square butt has greater utility outside of skinning.

as the others mentioned, the SF is a great choice. also, points to you for coming here and asking. taking the time to do this research on your part, adds a bit more thoughfulness to what will be a great gift.

I would recommend Snow and Nealley from Maine. They are of the highest quality and last forever. Hope this helps!

My wife got me a Gransfors Bruks small splitting axe several years ago for my wood pile kindling work, which I really like. For camping and such I'd go with the small forest axe. But don't overlook Snow&Nealley mentioned by gtown. They make very nice axes too. They can be found at http://www.snowandnealley.com/ but better prices can be found elsewhere for their products.

Either of these two companies make very good products and you won't go wrong either way,

clarri, since you've registered at BF, you can use the search function to look at past posts about Gransfors Bruks axes. Just use "Gransfors Bruks" as your keywords, and search all forums. You'll be reading for a while.

If you really want your boyfriend to lose it, get him an outdoor knife like the BRKT Northstar to accompany that axe. He'd probably marry you on the spot. :D

Good luck in your search.

The Wetterling Long Hunting Axe (LHA) got high marks on a review over at outdoors magazine, and much cheaper than the GB SFA. Check it out.

Oh man that's cool!:D

the axe I have is similar to the Forrest axe I like it alot. My wife got it for me at a garage sale, It completely blew me away that she thought to get it for me.

Ain't Wives n' Girlfriends great!

He'll probably love either one:)

I own the GB hunter, small forest, forest, and double bladed thrower. I love thier axes they hold an edge well and I use them for all my axe needs. I would concur with the suggestion of the small forest axe, I like the hunter more but it has that round end that most people who dont hunt wont use so the forest axe is more practical.
