I'm looking for a bag to hold my 10pc kit. i really like some of the maxpedition bags, but i'm not sure which one to get. The old style haversacks are perfect but i want something that will close securely (not just a flap) here is what's going in it

1 knife. probably a ka-bar short (nothing bigger)
2. 32oz guyot bottle
3. poncho
4. para cord (100ft)
5. bacho laplander saw
6. compass (probably a brunton)
7. headlamp
8. strike force
9. rite in rain notebook
10. small roll of duck tape

everything should be around 7lb give or take..
the kicker is i want to be able to stuff this bag in my larger back-pack(so nothing to bulky) I'm actually thinking about the Maxpedition rollypoly folding back-pack. the rollypoly mega dump pouch would work if it had a shoulder strap. i want to keep the price around $50

what do you guys suggest?

I just bought a sling gear pack from maxpedition, probably bigger than what you need. But I have a glock 17 with 3 32 round mags, 32 oz in built in pouch, attached my TOPS punisher on the molle straps to the side, eod breached bar, first aid kit, parachord. Also have the jumbo LE pack, but it's more haversack style. What ever you get their quality is awesome.

Maxpedition Falcon 2 pygmy AWESOME you can evern get more stuff in there my pack is about 14 pounds with EVERYTHING I would need to survive anywhere

That is a rather bold statement !

I never can find a balence between a daypack and the smaller Maxpedition type packs. I just cant carry enough in the versa pack yet its handy to throw from car to car.

I use the butt bag from an ALICE set-up to hold my main ''Emergency'' kit...it was 7 bucks at Surplus store. I am a cheap bastard LOL, but it is a nice sturdy bag, just about the right size for my needs...I can either carry it as a stand-alone bag, where I have it slung satchel style and attached to a waist belt along with an MOLLE pouch and GI canteen kit, or I can feed the straps of my ALICE pack thru it and carry it piggy-back on my main 'pack.

This may not work for you though, because it closes with a flap, it does cinch down really tight though..I don't see how it could have stuff fall out of it.

I use a UTG tactical messager bag I bought from amazon $28 with free shipping it is a generic jumbo versapack

If you are willing to go up to $100 you can get one of the best small packs around imo. The Kifaru E&E. It will carry your essentials and double as a pouch which can be attached to a bigger pack too. Very cool design.

Thanks for all the replies :)

I like the butt pack idea but the ones i've seen do not have a shoulder strap. (what would be the best way to add one?)

I'm still tempted to go with the classic haversack http://www.canteenshop.com/id75.html maybe add a sea liner for waterproofing. I think using some 550 cord and buttons i can sew on a toggle style fastener for it.

I use a 5.11 Push Pack for daily carry that would easily handle everything on your list. I even have a medium sized dump pouch/ roly poly pouch mounted to it in case I want to pick mushrooms or berries, or pack out trash whatever. It's a good bag. If you want something more customizable, you can go to Quartermaster Uniforms. They are the only distributors for the 5.11 SERE bag. It's alot like the Push Pack but with no external pockets of it's own and covered inside and out with Molle so you can attach water bottle holders, pouches, knives etc. And it's only $35 plus tax and shipping. I just pulled trigger on one myself.

The GI butt pack is a good idea. They have D-rings on them for attaching to the H- or Y- suspender harness, and a standard GI sling (made for carrying things like the 2 Qt canteen pouch over the shoulder) attach to those. You can really use anything that will attach to a d-ring like a rifle sling, paracord sling, etc.

Another option is a surplus gas mask bag. The Swedish ones are rather secure, have a main compartment, a frontal compartment (plenty big for a fire, tin, bug dope, compass, and a few other items, the main section should hold your water bottle and other items fine. They come with a sling and somewhat narrow waistband. Other countries have various surplus satchels, gas mask bags and haversacks, which all secure shut, and of course are soldier-proof. They make a great way to have a survival/woodsbum kit that is easy to stow and remove from a larger camping pack.

as mentioned that will all fit in a 10x4 or 12x5 Maxped bottle holder, at least id does in mine :)

My butt-bag setup. The MOLLE pouch isn't needed for the basic 10-piecer, I add it when I want to carry some food or other luxury items. I also have a MagLite belt carrier I snap on the bag to carry my 'Hawk...it makes a dandy hawk/hatchet carrier (for 3 bucks).

I simply used a padded strap I had from an old carry-on luggage bag...and the belt is in fact a 25rd shotgun shell bandoleer belt LOL I had it around the house and it's handy if I want to use my bag while hunting.

Total Cost

Bag- $7

Belt- I think around $4-5

Strap- free/no additional cost

MOLLE 1st Aid Pouch- $6

MagLite Holder- $3

So around 20 bucks...and the majority of that price is extras and additions I wanted. LOL like I said, I'm a cheap cheap bastard.

Sweet set up:) I think i'm going to do something similar, for the price of one Maxpedition (which i think is awesome stuff) i can buy several surplus packs and give'em a try, and figure out which style i like best.
