(I totally thought I made a thread, but somehow posted this as a reply... weird... also, can I make a poll? Internet challenged this week...)

You know how people always say "If I could go back then with what I know now..."

Well, what if you could go back to ordering your first BKT - which one would you get? (From the currently available lineup...)

I started with an 11 and then a 2 - but if I were ordering one today as my first, I think it might be a 7.

Thoughts?

I started with an 11 and my 2 is on my doorstep, literally just got shipment notification... IF I had to go back, I would have bought the 2 then prob. a 7 then an 11 then a 14. Love the idea I can open my beer with the 11.

My first was a 9, and knowing what I know now, it still would be. I bought it originally for a very specific reason. I needed something to baton mostly green wood down to thin pieces that would burn in the fireplace. That's still what I use it the most for, though I have taken it out on camping trips and used it for chopping too. I hope it's not considered blasphemy in here, but it's not the best chopper I own. Good, great even, but my Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri is a bit better. But the BK9 gets more use overall than any other knife I own, at least during the winter it does. It's an integral part of my fireplace tools now, and has been for more than 7 or 8 years now. So then or now, the 9 would be my first choice.

I bought a 7 and would do it again, matter of fact I think if I had a choice of only one... that would be it..... well maybe the 9 but I haven't used it as much so dunno.

I have a $6 tram I modified from an 18" bush to a 14" golok, it sits outside all winter and batons wood if needed....... I've been that thing, and tried to break it repeatedly to no avail...

also I have a super cheap CS 13" kuk, that is an absolute beast.. its convexed and I've never chipped it like others have claimed, maybe I got the good one as opposed to others??

Wouldn't change a thing. The 2 was first and introduced me to whole new way of thinking about an outdoor blade. Every outdoorsman should own a BK2.

I started with a BK9 and would do the same again. I am really focused on the big choppers. I think the BK2 will be a great knife but I had to get the chopper out of the way first!

Now if I could go back in time..... Probably the Patrol Machete!!

I started with a BK9, but it served to fill the gap in my knife collection, as I was craving a chopper. Upon playing with it for all of, I dunno, 2 mins, I realized it was a hell of a knife. I ended up cancelling an order I had placed for a Junglas (!!!) and traded my ESEE-5 for a BK2. As much as I dig the '2, I still think the '9 is a killer gateway knife into the Becker scene. These two are staying in my collection/arsenal for a loooong time.

Yeah, I know which kuk you're talking about. I know CS doesn't get a whole lotta love around here, but I can't fault them for their bushwackin' tools. Never owned anything else of theirs, so I can't speak to their folders or hunting or SD offerings.

I guess you know that the one you're referring to is not the same as the Gurkha I mentioned above. The Gurkha is a full 5/16" thick, and weighs in at a limb-shearing 31 ounces. Maybe not so great for bug-out situations, but for drive-to camping spots, it can't be beat.

Sorry if this is getting too far off topic, and sorry to anyone who has a visceral dislike for Nutnfancy, but he does a very complete review of the Gurkha Kukri here if you're interested. Both Nutnfancy and his buddy that he took to field test the Gurkha seemed to be fans of the ESEE Junglas they took along to do a side-by-side comparison with, and both of them had to admit that the Gurkha out-performed the Junglas significantly during the test.

Back on topic, even at that, considering that I bought the BK9 for the specific purpose of processing wood at home for use in the fireplace, I would still have bought it first even if we opened it up to all other brands. It's perfect for what I bought it for, and the Gurkha is a royal PITA to baton with, so even if I had been aware of it at the time, I wouldn't have bought it.

Knowing what I know now it would probably have been a Reinhardt Kukri way back when or perhaps a BK6.

Of the readily available stuff - beats me. Bk2 maybe? BK11? BK14? BK9? Heck - I dunno but I like my Beckers.

I started with a 2 and then a 14 and 9 after about a month. I carry and use the 14 the most, so i might have rather had it sooner. I guess I really wouldn't change the order, but I would have bought an extra 14.

I started with the 7 and then the 10. I didn't buy a 2 for a couple of years, because I always thought, "I have the 10, not much a difference". The first time I took a 2 out to the woods, I wished I had gotten started with the 2.

Most of ya'll know my love for the BK2, so I won't expound, but, I bought a 2 at SMKW, and kicked myself in the ass for not getting it sooner.

I wouldn't change a thing either.

Got a 2 and a 9 at the same time. ( and a 13 as a bunny with the 9)

Haven't looked back ... except maybe the 77 (that's a NICE knife !)

Onward and upward ! :D

I first bought a BK7, BK9, BK2, BK11, and now I'm waiting for the BK4.

I would start with the BK2.

I started with the 3, and honestly I am pretty glad I did. If I had started with the 2, I wouldn't have really felt like I had much of a reason to get the 3.

A BK2 is a must have piece of equipment. Yea you need to read page 34 of " The Guide ":D

It does'nt matter which one you get first. You will be so impressed, you WILL buy the others. My only suggestion is to get the one you think you will use the most first.

You mean, "Which gateway drug would you like to have gotten hooked on?"

Oh, I don't know... Haha.

A while back, when my friends and I were just getting into good knives (we used to think that Big-5 had the best knives in the world), we were looking at 3 knives, and didn't know which one of us should get which knife - the BK9, the Ka-Bar LHB, or Ontario SP-10? None of us had the balls to make a decision because what if I mess up, and buy the wrong knife? There's no turning back...

Well, my friend (GenerallyAwsomeDude) got the BK9, and holy crap, I wish I would have gotten that one too. Instead, I got the LHB, which is a great knife, just not Becker quality. My first Becker was a BK7, personally.

I wish I could go back in time and get that BK9. Because of all the Beckers that my friend and I own, his BK9 gets thrashed, and loved, and abused, more than any other.
