Which Becker?

I am going to buy ONE becker knife... i don't know which one

I am looking for a jack of all trades blade. Which one would you say would be the most useful in general?

It will be used for camping, hunting, fishing, and anything else one uses a knife for.

Looking mainly at the BK9 and BK7 but i'm flexible

already have kukris, skinning knives, folders, machetes,a custom skinner and a handful of other blades, so i don't know why the hell i'm buying a becker... but i am

I absolutely love my 7. That said, why don't you go over to the Becker subforum and pore over the pix, find which one you like, and eventually take a sip of the Kool-Aid.

I would go with the 7 or the 5. I have no experience with either, but both should work great as the "do it all" blade. The 9 is sweet, but I wouldn't call it a "jack of all trades" knife, as it really is more of a chopper that happens to be able to do multiple things.

Good luck :).

i love my BK 2 companion good all around knife, only had it for a week but it is becoming my goto knife for eveything.

I'm leaning toward the 7 but haven't considered the 5 until now. Can anyone tell me why they'd recommend one of the other?

Based on what you've described, the BK5 or BK2 seem like the ideal options. BK7 and BK9 may be better for pure wood processing/chopping but perhaps not as versatile BK5 or BK2. I'm sure others with more experience will provide more specific info. Maybe the ideal solution is buying more than one Becker!;)

It IS the Jack of all trades knife. Lighter and faster than the 7 with the full length swedge. Full flat so its a wicked slicer. The upswept shape is a classic Blade design that has stood the test of time. It can chop and whittle. It can skin and gut. Its the definition of camp knives. When a mountain man has a one knife for it all, the bk5 is the design he would reach for. Long enough for big knife tasks, but so quick and light in hand that it excels at small tasks to. Its my favorite becker for a reason. that and because its also the sexiest.

I started with a 7, great all round blade, The BK-5 was my most recent Becker. Fast in the hand, good slicer, will baton, but tends to chew up the baton a bit. I think it depends on how you intend to use it.

Another one to take a look at is the Becker/Ritter.

Good luck getting just one,

Better shot of a couple of nines,

Here is the Ritter,

Jack of all trades - that's the BK2, IMO.

It whittles tiny spoons and forks and things...

It chops seasoned oak for no good reason...

It cleans fish...

It batons...

It poses majestically...

It survives nuclear blasts...

First off, there's no wrong decision. You buy any Becker, and you'll find stuff to appreciate and you'll get a lot of use out of it. Plus you can beat it like it touched you in your no-no place and it will stand strong. I've got a BK2, BK7, BK9, BK10, BK11, and BK13 and would be hard-pressed to give any of them away.

IMO if you do a lot of wood processing, then the BK2 is the knife to start with. However, I feel it's just the slightest bit thick and heavy to be considered truly versatile, which is FINE if you're processing a fair bit of wood since it destroys wood but otherwise you want the BK7. The 7 is thinner so it slices better and is so light and lively in the hand.

well guys, i appreciate all the advice. After looking at all the pics, i decided to go with the BK7.

I was tempted to get the BK5, but i already have a custom that's very similar, so the BK7 will be something new

the biggest concern for me is that the sheath is going to be virtually useless... hopefully it will be okay

Depending on what you mean by "totally useless" you may or may not be happy. The original sheaths are nothing fancy, but they are entirely functional and are constructed pretty well. I have no problems carrying my 9 in the stock sheath, so it should suit you just fine until you can get something "cooler" to put it in :D.

And congrats on the 7, you'll love it.

You guys all suck. Every time I think I've convinced myself that I'm set as far as my fixed blades go (the best and most used of which are, of course, my Kabars) you do something like post up Clich's deadsexy snakeskin-patina'd-BK5 or GK's nuke-proof BK2. Guess I need to take a trip to the gun shop after my next paycheck. :grumpy: :D :D

That's how we roll! :D
