Which Benchmade 940 Series Knife?

I have admired the 940 series knives for some time, and would now like to get one. Two handle colors and two blade shapes (clip point and modified reverse tanto) are offered. I would be interested in a satin plain blade. Which of the blade shapes would be most useful for general utility tasks and self-defense? I like both and am having a difficult time deciding. I would appreciate your opinion. Also, can you recommend a dealer to get one? Thanks.

I personally LOVE the reverse tanto model. It lends itself perfectly to any task, and the tip is really strong! I ahve the green handle, satin blade, plain edge model. I bought it used here on the Forums. The edge was a little scratched up, but it's a user so it didn't matter. I carry it just about every other day, and use it all the time.

I really like my black handled 942 - I don't carry it only 'cause it opens a little too easily to be legal here. I intend to get some torx drivers and tighten it up a bit. I really wish I could have afforded the carbon fiber handled D2 blade version, though - my guess is that's the best one of these knives.

I have the 942. I love the reverse tanto blade. I carry it every day. Wonderful knife. Feels good in the hand and cuts really well.

If you like piercing, the 941 or the 943 are for you. If you like slicing, the whole series is for you. Our friends at www.newgraham.com can hook you up for just under $110. And they include Curad bandages in most orders.

They all are very well made and nobly looking knives. I prefer colored handles for less tactical look and more bystander friendly appearance. I carry my plain edged green handled 940 when going formally dressed. Probably I like it more because of unusual but still elegant blade shape, however I cant consider what common it has with Japanese tanto knives and how tanto blade can be reversed...

I prefer the clip point blade to the modified reverse tanto and have owned several variants of the 941/943. I think the carbon fiber handle feels better in my hand and tends not to show scratches like the anodized aluminum would. Oh yeah, did I mention that the D2 cuts like a laser?

For cheap, I'd take a 943 because I like the black handle better than green.

If I couldn't get a carbon fiber D2 model, but wasn't so concerned about the chepest deal, I'd get one of the Limited Edition red handled models with the BC1 Boron Carbide coating (like the one in my safe!). I'd definitely stay away from the BT black teflon coating.

Joe Talmadge clearly knows a thing or two about blade shapes, among other things related to knives. On a number of occasions, he's made it clear he much prefers the Clip and Drop point styles. As I recall, at least some of Joe's reasoning on this is in his blade type FAQ, which you can find on this site (see above). He has elaborated further elsewhere, in posts here and there. My impression is that the modified reverse tanto would run last, in his scheme of things. My own preferences run along pretty much the same lines.

But, many here and elsewhere seem to like the 940 type blade - quite a number it would seem. I don't agree myself, but that only serves to confirm how much this sort of thing can be a matter of taste particular to the individual. I would add though, that 'the theory' is very much in favour of Clip or Drop, if you follow me.

Soon enough, BM will be putting out a limited edition 941 (probably 940 also) in S30V, with CF grip. That'd be the go I think.

So to find out, I'll probably HAVE to get one of those 941s with the CF and the S30V because if it's any better at all it will be one Sweeeeeeett knife.

My vote is for the 942 - black handle, reverse tanto, satin blade.

I carry it almost everyday as well. It was my first "real" knife.
Becomes loose for me too, i have to loctite that pivot soon.

I bought a 943BT from Newgraham last week, when it gets here I'll tell you guys what I think of it.

The red one in the pic below, almost sold it but was reminded by a friend that that knife has stayed about the longest of any in my collection and I'd truly miss it if she were to leave! He was right...;) Thanks again Thom...

BM941 with boron carbide coated blade, very sleek in appearance, extremely smooth in opening and has a solid lockup as well. Not the tank that my Sebenza is but then it's in a different category I feel...

I've own the reverse tanto as well, love that blade shape too but the 941 sleeker image is way more a draw for me and the edge is very practical in shape, direct to the point type of thing.

I'm considering picking up the 921 again and giving that another try, had one for a short time, like the guard area on the 941 more, it puts your hand up closer to the blade when working, but still prevents you from moving onto the edge.

Either one, you can't go too far wrong! Enjoy the search :)
