Hi all,

this is my first post here - and after reading several hours worth of posts i must say i'm sure happy i found your terrific forum !

I'll try to get right to the point and question. I'm interested in purchasing a Chris Reeve Green Beret and am unsure which blade length is best suited to me. I'm living in northwest New Meixco and do a good deal of hiking / camping - and have yet to only carry a folder. It seems to me a fixed blade would be a much better choice ; though which blade length i'm unsure about.

I'm currious to hear real world experience with both blade lengths - do members here find the 5.5" a better all-around choice or, as a friend puts it, is "a 5-inchish fixed blade is a knife in search of a job to do, whereas a 7-inch or 8-inch is apt to be a round-the-clock, go-to tool" ?

Many thanks for any advice / opinions - your time and consideration are greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Billy

Welcome to BF. Blade choice should be based on what is comfortable for YOU the user. I find that for myself 5 to 6 inches is a good length for everyday use for a fixed blade. However, I have different knives for other uses that range from 4 to 7 inches.

Welcome to Bladeforums! (We also have Chris Reeve and Wilderness & Survival Skills forums here.)

If you've been getting along with a small folder, the 5.5" GB would be at least as effective, without being clumsy. Do you ever need something for heavier work, like an axe or a saw? If not, the extra length of the 7" GB would be wasted.

You know when you're hiking, anything you carry has to be worth the weight. While preparing for an ultimate emergency is a tempting thought, there isn't much the 5.5" can't do that the 7" can.

Thanks very much to you both ! I'm basically looking for a "full range use" knife, while keeping the size to a minimum. The extra two inches aren't a huge addition, but if unnecessary then i'll do without. I don't do a great deal of chopping / sawing, but it does come up from time to time.

I greatly appreciate the advice / opinions - now to make the decision :D

Kind Regards,

Billy
