I just bought a Merlin and love it. The blade is in ATS-55. I want to buy my dad one now. I noticed that on the lady's beautiful Spyderco pictures, that Spyderco also makes the knife in VG-10. Which should I buy - and better yet why??? :D

LOVE THE MERLIN SPYDERCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Either blade steel performs well on a fully serrated folder such as the Merlin. IMO, ATS-55 holds a great edge because of the teeth only touching the material.

VG-10 makes one of the sharpest edges, while the 440V stuff are very aggressive cutters.
ATS-55 is pretty good, don't get me wrong, but I like VG-10 better.

ATS-55 has given me more fits to get a decent edge on it than any other steel.

I won't own anything in that steel and won't sharpen them anymore when asked at the club on Sundays.

Thankfully, there are not many that come across my stones to begin with.

VG-10 is good as others have stated.

ATS-55 is good (I like it better than ATS-34 for cutting and sharpening). VG-10 is better. Borderline best of all steels overall (except S30V -- not enough experience with that yet), IMO.

If 440V (S60V) is available, avoid it. I've been very unimpressed with it.

I've had a lot of rust problems with ATS-55. I've had ATS-55 and VG-10 knives on me, gotten wet (fresh water), and the ATS-55 had numerous rust spots, while VG-10 had none.

i've had great luck with my ATS-55 merlin (SE). not sure ho the vg-10 would do, but i am curious. maybe a i'll look for a PE in it..
