Which Blade?

You're going to be dropped on land, somewhere between the Arctic and Antarctic circles for two weeks. Could be tropical. Could be sub-arctic. Could be desert or temperate. You won't know which untill you get out of the drop off vehicle. You willl be provided with appropriate clothing and a fire stick at the drop point.

You may choose one cutting implement to help you survive. It can be a knife, an axe, a shovel, or a saw. It can be multi-bladed if you want, but it must be a single unit, not a combo of more than one in one sheath. It must be a production piece available on the open market. Which do you choose? Why?

A large model SAK.

I'm not familiar with all the models but it would include a woodsaw and a hack saw.

Since I don't leave home without it,I guess it would have to be my Chris Reeves Mountaineer II.:p

Busse Steel Heart

Most durable, best all around knife.

Several others are my second choice including:

Mad Dog ATAK2 for the same reason.

I don't think a Multi-tool would be any good. I would want the strong knife. An axe is a pain to carry and not good for small chores.

A good stout fixed blade with a tough hair shaving edge. One that'll handle the lite chopping, whittling, digging, ice shaving/shaping and game duties.

Les Stroud is a survival specialist up here in the Great White North and he proved he could go on for one week with only a small SAK with a saw. No axe, no large blades with fancy names, no shovel, no large saw!! A simple SAK alone and he did it.

I have been backpacking for years and I have never found the need for anything larger than a SAK with a saw. It opens up my dry food packages and handy around the campsite.

I'd go with the SAK.

Doc Ron would choose the humble SAK over the Nordooh, which is ronhood spelled backwards :)

What about your endorsement of Busse Battle Mistress ?

Do you think you could talk Rob into mass producing some Nordooh's so we can all buy one, instead of begging for table scraps :)

Leather

I just got back from a three day camping trip, I took a cold steel trail master bowie in stainless. Performed awesome! The knife took a beating and kept on cutting.

Sounds funny I know but I've always said that if I had to take just one blade it would be the Rucksack SAK or an equivalent. I can make all the chopping tools and other stuff out there with stone. Hell, if push came to shove we show in Volume 10 how to make a wilderness forge and then I could forge an axe head from the steel junk, horseshoes etc ya find out there.

That little knife can make anything I need and open a tin can ;)

Big blades just make it easier for big chores.

The Simonich, the Rinaldi, the blades by Tops, The Fehrman blades the Bill Siegle, the Chris Bowles, the Busse are all Fine knives and I would take any of them. I'd have a hard time deciding which of those I'd take. But the SAK... that cool little knife, that is easy to choose.

Hello Ron,

You did not respond to my question as to whether you could influence Rob into mass producing the Nordooh, like the Raven.

Do you have any influence with him :)

I have no influence on Robs decisions nor do I want to interfere. I have no idea what his intentions are with respect to that design.

Best of luck.

Ron

It took me FOREVER to figure out what the hell Nordooh meant!! I figured it was one of them heathen Injun names or something.. Like Vegetarian, which is an OLD Apache term for Bad Hunter;)

I also, if only one knife is allowed, would go for my Victorinox Swiss Champ, thier largest pocket toolbox. :) I've carried one (which ever was the largest blade number combination at the time) in all sorts of lifestyles for nearly 20 years and love them as much as I trust them... implicitly.

I recently saw some multiblade Browning folders advertised in a Cabela's catalog. The blades included a saw. These knives are more expensive than a SAK, but the blades are made from 440C. I was wondering if one of those Browning's could be a higher grade substitute for a SAK with a saw, since the Browning blades are 440C?

The lesson here is; if it really has to be ONE tool it should be a tool you can use to make other tools! If you have the option of bringing a second tool, then you add the big knife or hand axe!

No argument on the small blade and its virtues. That said, I'd sure as hell would not want to be caught in some of the places I've been without a large fixed blade or axe. This is a tough choice for me and I've been practicing small-knife chores with a large blade. At this point in my assessment, I'll go with the large blade. I rate protection from exposure high on my list (for point of reference).

At this point, the Natural Outlaw is minimum and the BM preferred.
(I don't have a steel heart, which might be optimum... IMHO)
