Hope this is the right place to ask this.

Folks Help me out here!

I would like to know which knife brands are good collectibles or desirables. I knew at this and still learning.

I not really interested in the high end dress knives with all kinds of damascus blades and fancy handles and gems.

But go quality Custom handmade tactical folders or custom handmade daily carry knives, not just the ones you would never think of carry, like the color damascus blades with gems etc.

I have a few BMs and love them, I also have a few William Henrys

Next on my wish list are Elishewitz, Custom Microtech, Custom Emerson, Lightfoot.

What are other brands?

I always get confused at the prices, I just shaw a custom microtech for $2400, looked like any other custom microtech. So How do I know if the knife is priced right.

So many types like in Microtech and Emerson, but it took me a while there are custom version of these also hence the price hike.

I will be getting a lightfoot Max Velocity soon.

But Always looking for custom or limited edition.

So please help out to expand my wish list with some worth while collectible names and model numbers of custom knives.

Happy New Year

Your most frequent answer is going to be Sebenza but I like the Scott Cook Lochsa , Strider and Larry Chew

JW Smith, Mike Obenauf, Aaron Fredrick.

I don't think you could do much better.

You mentioned Greg Lightfoot. You won't go wrong there. He makes some outstanding knives.

I'd also like to add Bob Lum, Matt Cucchiara and Larry Chew to the list of recommended makers.

As far as knowing if a knife is worth what is being asked for it is concerned, the only way you are going to know is to do as much research as you can. Use this forum as a place to educate yourself. There is a tremendous amount of knowledge in the collective membership of Bladeforums.

Hi FL,

First, heed the advice of Keith. Do as much research as you can. One of the problems with forums is that people have a tendency to list their favorite makers as opposed to the best makers for the money. Which is what you seem to be asking for.

Case in point, you were asking for custom knife recommendations. Someone brought up Chris Reeve knives. These are factory knives and as such are not what you are looking for. I don't think the person was trying to mislead you, however you have to pay attention as to what names are being thrown around.

Another example, the forum you are on will determine to a large degree the makers that are recommend. On the USN the maker list would be about 90% from the names mentioned here. Again, mostly the recommendations are favorites not necessarily what you are looking for.

The best recommendation I can make is to attend a show like the Blade Show where a large group of folder makers will be. Then take you time and look at all the different makers and make up your own mind.

Lastly, can you believe people mentioned Matt Cucchiara and Aaron Fredrick (they do make nice knives). And they didn't mention Kit Carson, Bob Terzuola and RJ Martin. I can see how RJ would slip your mind....he is only on the cover of Blade Magazine.

A few other fair to midland tactical folder makers, Phil Boguszewski, Scott Sawby, Brian Tighe, Rick Hinderer, Darrel Ralph, Pat Crawford and Charles Marlowe.

Lots of choices out there. Happy Hunting.

You can never, never over emphasize the value and need of research and personal experience.

That being said, my list is;

Kit Carson
Gordon Chard
Scott Cook
Pat Crawford
Grant Hawk
Bob Lum
R.J. Martin
C.H. Morris
Melvin Pardue
Scott Sawby
John W. Smith
Bob Terzuola

These guys all give remarkable value for the dollar, and you won't have problems moving them if you need the cashish, or change interests. I do not collect from makers not residing in the United States, so there are a lot more options available to you, should you not have that requirement, but these names, and the other ones mentioned will satisfy most of your requirements.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Lets also not forget Tom Mayo, Farnk Centofante, oh I'm sure I'm missing some more....

Excellent advice.

How in the heck could I have missed Kit? :o

It would be an understatement to say that I am no tactical folder expert, but I have seen and handled many of Brian Tighe's knives and I think they're first rate.

Roger

Edited to add:

This Tighe may not be your idea of "tactical" but it sure does knock my socks off. Besides, you could always order it in drab black and grey if that is your preference (pic from knifeart.com):

I didn't forget Kit, it's just too hard right now to get a Carson.
Don't get me wrong, just about any Carson you find is a bargain, they're just getting harder and harder to come by.

Matt Cucchiara, David Winston, Scott Cook, Brian Tighe, Larry Davidson, I could go on and on.......

Just to name a few at the top of my list:

Ken Onion
Matt Cucchiara
Tom Mayo
Scot Cook
