Welcome to the Buck forum, Fan.
As you have read, there are many opinions. So versus an opinion here is my story.
Started out with a mid 70's 110 back in the mid 70's. Used it for years and years on deer. Then began accumulating other 110's and tried most all of them on deer. All work great. Then Buck started putting S30V in the Cabelas Alaskan Guide 110 and I evolved to a couple of those as well as a Bass Pro Buck 110 in the 154CPM steel.
I could process a couple of deer with the older steels, including the 420HC and they would start going dull into the third one. With the better steels, I can get into the 4th or 5th deer before they start going dull. I always have several sharp ones along to keep from having to stop to touch up a blade.
Thats my main use of a 110, and no, don't use the fancier customs. And I much prefer the lock back design of the 110.
And folks are right about the autos. Buck doesn't make or warranty them. I do have a few that seem to be of good quality tho. And one that I bought knowing it was a fake, that truly is a pile of junque. It lays here and serves as a letter opener.
The search is half the fun!!!
