Hello folks,
I would like to buy a Buck 301 Stockman knife. This seems like a great general purpose EDC pocket knife, and seeing as I am a regular pipe smoker (tobacco pipes, thank you very much!), the sheepsfoot blade seems ideal for trimming the cake build-up in a pipe's bowl. I see three variations of the USA made 301's in 420HC, the black knife with one rivet, the cherry Chairman with two rivets, and the rosewood with two rivets and brass. Which is best, or is it just aesthetics? Is there an advantage to two rivets over one rivet? Any input is appreciated. I would probably buy off of Ebay as the prices are much lower than from Amazon or other retailers.

Thanks!

I think it is just aesthetics. I bought the classic black handle version a couple weeks ago.

I'd say get the one you like the looks of best. Regardless of the cover material, it is a great knife for EDC.

Black sawcut 301s have hot pressed valox scales. They have integral plastic studs that are hot flared and form a rivet inside the blade well, open all the blades and you can see them. Riveted scales I believe are not glued just rivet on. 300

CCK, pick the Buck 301 variation that pleases you the most - I think the handles will all stay on equally well in virtually any normal use of a pocketknife. OH

One thing to consider with the rosewood one- the bolsters are brass and will tarnish if you touch them. Pretty easy to rub clean with brass polish, but I have all 3 that you've mentioned and carry the rosewood one the least because it means ill have to polish it again. If I had to do it just pick one id go for the black valox for its durability and low maintenance.
