I have been using K&G green compound to finish high polish blades and I also use #51 white compound from Texas Knife Supply which is supposed to be around 1300 or 1400 grit. The K&G compound gives a nice finish. Is any one using a compound that they like better for high polish. I hand sand to over 1200 grit before using the buffer. Thanks for any suggestions, Larry

Polishing is best done in steps. Start with a coarse compound like black or grey. Then move to a new wheel and green chrome or red rouge. Last, use a soft wheel and matchless white or no scratch pink.

I tend to go 400 grit greaseless, sisal wheel with cut & color, then pink. Like Nathan and Stacy said, it's a process not a step.

How far should you got with belts, etc before you go to the buffing wheels?

1200 is not high enough.
High polish is not a product of lots of buffing.
It's the result of effective sanding.
A good mirror polish should take very little time if you have a PERFECT sanded finish to a minimum of 2000. Preferably 3000.

Karl, Where can I find papers above 2000 grit? I use a felt backed 2000 grit belt sometimes before hand sanding. Should the sanding be done wet? Thanks for any advice you can give. I have a black bar and a pink bar of compound but have not used them...I guess I will dedicate a couple new buffs for that purpose. Thanks Stacy and Nathan. Larry

I only polish 440c and only polish hollow grinds. My belt progression is 50, 220, trizact a30, a16, a6. Then green chrome and pink scratchless.

The 3M polishing papers go to 8000 grit. They will hand polish to a mirror finish, and then a quick buff will finish it.

Tip - When you take them out of the bag, take a marker and draw an "X" on the back side of the white 8000 grit sheet. Otherwise, you can't tell the back from the front once you start to use it. The other color sheets are easy to tell front from back.

I was referring to sheets and not belts - to clarify.
Ebay is a good source for automotive paint supplies. I use a lot of 3000.

Holy crow Larry, by the looks of that knife it seems you got it figured out.

It's hard to judge a mirror finish by a small photo. You just about have to have it in hand.

Anyone pull off the Steve Johnson mirror polishing technique.I haven't been able to but I also don't hollow grind, which may have something to do with it.
