I'm looking for some help to find the best fit for me before I buy any more knives. I just took delivery of an NMSFNO and a Skinny ASH. The skinny ASH fits my hand perfectly, yet I like the size of the NMSFNO, which does not fit my hand perfectly (close, but not as comfortable). The NMSFNO seems just slightly heavier than I'd like at 20.3oz, while the skinny ASH is nice at 15.5oz, although I could go a little heavier. I think the weight would be less of a factor if the handle fits me as well as the Skinny ASH does.

My question is: which model would have the same handle as the skinny ASH, yet would have a 7.5" or 8" blade (.25" thick), and weigh 16-20 ounces? Or, do all of the .25" blades have a different (wider) handle than the skinny ASH? Would a hand formed NMSFNO handle be a little slimmer than the machined ones?

Thanks from a Busse newbie...

You could always send the NMSFNO back to Busse and have them slim the scales out a little. You could also do it yourself and then you will know exactly when enough is enough.

I also think the Sarsquatch would git the bill for a bigger, slimmer, and lighter knife.

Straight Handle Steel Heart 2.

Those SHSH's are ok if you like that sort of thing. :p

In general, it looks like you don't like Magnum handles that much, so maybe check out WWW.HogCult.com, find the blade size you like and then look in the exchange, or post in the WTB section for that knife without mag handles.

SARSquatch is a nice blade, but only 3/16" (.187") thick.

gofast, welcome to the Busse world. The best way to figure out what you might like is to meet up with another piglet and check out their collection. Where do you live?

I'm west of Chicago.

I'm pretty sure I need a Steel Heart without the Magnum handle, .25", 7-8", INFI or an NMSFNO without the Magnum handle. Are the hand shaped NMSFNO handles "Magnum"-sized?

Full flat ground Fusion Steel Heart with standard slabs was what I was thinking as well. They are easier to find IMO because most people seem to prefer the mags. Here's a side by side of an HHFSH and and NMSFNO... my HHFSH has mags. But the blade lengths are almost identical.

You are describing a Straight Handle Steel Heart II and you'll have to separate yourself from some $$$ to get one!!!

The handle of the Skinny ASH is known as the Straight Handle, same as on those old Straight Handle Steel Hearts in Mulder's group shot above. The SHSH meets your criteria, (some are over 0.3" thick) but they cost ~$1,000, if you can find one.

I think that the hand-shaped scales on the NMSFNO are slightly smaller than machined mags. Can anyone confirm this? Have you considered sanding down/reshaping the scales on your NMSFNO? That model represents a bargain in INFI for that size. An older Fusion Steel Heart will be over $500.

There are Hogs in the Chicago area, maybe one will reach out to you. Good luck in your quest, the journey is only beginning. :D

I would email the Skunk at company store and inquire about
the new Green Linen Sar4.
Suppose to be a doosey.

I was not a fan of the "fusion" styled handles on the FBMLE I had, but that may have been due to the thickness of the blade and the mags.

I have an HHFSH with mags on the way, and I will try that to see if I like it.

On the other hand, I do own an SHBA (though I've never held an SHSH) and I LOVE the handle on it. Try an HH or other .27" FSH with standard slabs, and if that doesn't work, be prepared to spend big loot for an SHSH.

You might also take the earlier advice of an SFNOLE.

The good thing about INFI is that if you buy something and don't like it, you probably won't lose any money when you go to sell it.

Good luck,

Jason
