which busse to get first? what about sheath options?

hello!

i am a knife enthusiast from austria (so please excuse any grammar or other mistakes) - my collection consists mostly of folders but...

the longer i lurk around here in the busse forum the more i want one :D

so from the bussecombat website it seems to me there currently are three models available to order directly: mean street, team gemini and argonne???

my local dealer would have some in stock:

HG55
custom shop boss street
leaner meaner
basic 10 LE
NMFBM

what about sheaths - are there shops that sell custom sheaths without the need to send your knife in? or are you guys making your own? since i am lefthanded i think it would make sense to invest in some sheath making tools and materials...

any suggestions?

regards
andreas

What are you going to be using the knife for? Mashed Cat I believe has a decent selection of knives they can make kydex sheaths for.

U should go pick up the NMFBM right away from your lokal dealer and then order some kydex from Buybrown or Azwelke :)

thanks for the input so far - really nice looking sheaths

:)

ok - the NMFBM may be a little to big

i would like to mount it to a backpack (fast pack edc) - maybe use it to prepare kindling - i guess the hg55 is too small for that?

i could not check out the knives in real life because the local dealer is not really THAT local...

I like the HG 55(hollow ground 5.5 inch) and the TGLB is hollow ground too, but it is around 7 3/4 inches and the tang is lightened and has a fuller. I like the competition finish which is no finish. You will probably get a better deal on the TGLB directly from Busse.

I hear that Busse knives sold by dealers in Europe are rather pricey, but I also understand that importing one will also incur some hefty taxes and fees, so you may want to do the math on both options before deciding.

If you decide to buy direct from Busse and have it shipped over, I'd think about the Team Gemini Light Brigade. Since it is a current standard Busse website offering that's been available for a while, most if not all sheathmakers that want one probably already have one and can make sheaths from theirs, or you can see if Busse could send it to a known sheathmaker here in the USA for a perfect fit, and then have them shipped together from there to you. You will want to contact the sheathmaker as well to be sure that this will not be a problem before asking Busse to send it to the one you choose.

If you decide to go with what the European dealer that you mentioned has, the B10 LE (Basic 10 Limited Edition) is a nice 10 inch bladed chopper with a satin blade and a Resiprene-C handle over a stout hidden tang... A lot of knife but fairly light for its size and should pair well with the Fast Pack (I googled the pack to see pix). Second choice for me would be the HG55 based on what you stated its use would be. It's no chopper, but will easily handle many batonnings with a piece of wood to the spine for processing kindling and such.
...Unfortunately, I had a sheathmaker to recommend that is over in the Netherlands, but after doing a quick search on BladeForums, I see that he's got some issues with filling orders (and after taking partial payments on those orders), and so I will refrain from the recommendation. Instead, there is a sub-forum here entitled Sheaths & Such where you might want to post a thread looking for recommendations on European sheathmakers. If the Forum name PiterM (from Poland, I believe) is mentioned in a posted reply, I know that guy has some serious skills, but I don't know if he sells sheaths or just makes them for his own personal knives.

The above is just my own opinion based on your post(s), and you may have other (and better) ideas. :)

Hope this helps you!
BTW, Welcome to the Forums! :)

Andreas,

Welcome to the Forum and its always nice to see more Europeans.

I own a lot of Busse's - tested them - and I like the Basic range of knives a lot. The Basic 10 LE would be my choice for your uses.

The NMFBM is a great knife for extra chopping ability. If shelter building had to involve chopping down a tree - and time was critical - the NMFBM will do the task faster than the
B10LE - but the B10LE will still do the job.

As you carry a knife a lot more than using it - the B10LE is a great choice. My favourite is an old school Asym Basic 9 - but the B10 is very close.

Sheath wise the well known guys on here could all do you a left handed sheath for a B10 or NMFBM. I make my own for leather and buy kydex from the guys on here. Learning how to work with leather is a great way to get just what you want. Kydex is a bit more robust and lighter. I tend to use it more for the larger blades.

Basic 10 would be fantastic for that.
TGLB would be another great choice and I understand that it will fit well in some readily available aftermarket sheaths.
NMFBM is highly collectible, but may cost more than it is worth if bought from a dealer.

all your input is very much appreciated!

true, for the prices european dealers charge i can get two knives if i order directly from busse (the tglb seems almost like a bargain - compared to our prices here)

so the only models i can currently order directly are the boss street, tglb and argonne? are other models available through the custom shop?

Yes. If they have blanks in stock, which usually means those models that have been recently offered...usually. They might have some CG NMFSH blanks as they are still currently filling orders on that model. The best thing to do is email or call Lexi and ask what they have on hand. Also, you might want to hold off on a decision until after the annual BLADE convention taking place in under 2 weeks. There may be some new models introduced there and you will see pix posted here of any if there are. :)

BTW, this probably when I should mention that although I moderate this forum, I do not work for Busse Combat, so the best thing to do is contact Busse directly and ask. They're great folks over there and the customer service is some of the best in the biz.

Please excuse any typos in this post...my phone doesn't play well on forums! :o:)

:) man these NMFSHs are awesome - to me they look like the NMFBM just 2 inches shorter???

Yes, the NMFSH is pretty impressive, but it is on the thick side, making it heavier for carry. The B10 is quite light relative to it's performance, but might be expensive for you.

Another idea is to put up a WTB, and specify that you are in Austria, and see if you can find a seller who will ship to you. Might be a cheaper option than your 'dealer'. (as a Registered User you cannot read other folks WTB posts, but you can create one and see your own)

If you are thinking of getting something other than the TGLB, then detail for us more about how you intend to use the knife, and we can make better recommendations.

i am afraid this is gonna get expensive :D my favourites after some research, learning some of the acronyms and checking out all your excellent photos:

:excitement:

first:

F SH
HH F SH
HOG F SH

so i understand the difference of the above mentioned variants is the blade thickness?

also the:

NMSFNO

so if i am not mistaken the NOs are quite similar to the SHs but are more like overall straight shape?

however 8"blade and 14" overall lenght seems just right when compared to the few fixed blades i already have

finally the:

NMFSH

- although it is almost at the limit size-wise

:D i like it here in the forum(s)

...and i found photos of some members incredible collections that i now use to show my gf if she is like:  no you wont buy another of these expensive knives - you dont need anymore!

almost forgot:

like these smaller ones as well:

boss street
meaner street
HG55

too many i would like right now!!

I have a NMFBM and a basic 10. I knew when I saw the NMFBM I must have one, but I tend to go for my basic 10 more often. It is an amazing all around blade.

NMFSH is pure awesomeness. It is slightly heavy but it's taking the place of a small hatchet and medium knife in my pack, so I'll be lighter overall. If you carry a larger hatchet or full on axe you would probably be better served by a SFNO or FSH.

about azwelke and mashed cat sheaths - most of them look symmetrical/ambidextrous to me - so one should be able to mount a tek lok or loop on both sides?
