Which Busse to replace a Chopweiler?

This may have been asked before, but I can't find it.

2 questions.

1) Which Busse is most comparable to the Chopweiler?

2) If I have and love the Chopweiler already, is "trading up" to the equivalent Busse worth while? I know you all feel Busse > other knives, but is it THAT much better than scrapyard to warrant a big expenditure? I have a custom fit sheath for my Chopweiler, so that would have to go with the chopweiler, and I'd need a whole new sheath built for the Busse.

Thanks!

SHE is the exact knife with a different handle.

It isn't worth trading up for me; SR101 is pretty awesome, too.

Hey lemme redirect this a little bit.

What's the closest Busse that's still decently easier to get ahold of :)

If you're happy with the knife you've got, and as far as I'm concerned there's no reason not to be, I don't see any reason to "trade up".

There's a definite pride of ownership associated with Busse knives though. It's nice to know you've got the toughest knife on the planet in your hands when you're choppin' away.

My biggest concern is the atypical handle on the Chopweiler. I really like it. I've never seen the same handle on a Busse. The Ergos are close, but they don't have the hump in back like the chopweiler handle does.

As you can never have enough choppers - I would get a NMSFNO right now! They are available, at a reasonable price (all things considered) and are a fantastic design.

Just do it ! :)

I can completely understand the problem you've got. I've got a decent collection of Busse knives, most of which I've purchased trying to replace my Ratweiler. There's nothing that exactly translates across, but there are a couple of options. Comparing them to my Ratweiler, which is pretty similar, the Sarsquatch is close in size, but thinner stock. Easier to carry, slightly less chopping ability. My HH FSH is a slightly better chopper, but longer. The closest I've come to a Ratweiler is is a 'ganza SHSH clip-point varient(there's a couple in the exchange if you want pics). Slightly thinner, and chunky handles, but real close size-wise They are, however, spendy!. Dollar-wise, I don't think you'll come out ahead trading up:eek::foot:, but I don't think you'll lose any ground by picking up a Sarsquatch or NMSFNO and trying it out, then picking one to get rid of. Good Luck:thumbup:

I bought my first Busse and took delivery last week. I love this knife and have put it to work hard this weekend batoning and chopping. I like this knife so much I ordered a second NMSFNO! I am searching for a Battle Mistress in bead blast right now.
Get it!

There is a really sweet SH-E on the exchange right now,,,,,,,, an excellent replacement for a chopweiller,,,,,, I believe it's 475 delivered with a case and a sharkskin rare earth magnetic sheath. Most importantly IT'S A BUSSE. Also appears Mint, unused, great chopping ability , gr8 warranty,,,,etc etc etc. You'll love it.

The Chopweiler slots right below the NMSFNO in size. Order from http://www.bussecombat.com/ while the getting is good.

is it THAT much better than scrapyard to warrant a big expenditure?

If you are looking for maximum value I would recommend SY and pick up a SoD if you can for 1/2 the price of the NMSFNO. If you can spend 2x without putting yourself in a bind, and you consider that you may use this knife the rest of your life, then you can make a very good case for going with Busse.

Note that the NMSFNO is not as carry friendly as your current Chopweiler because it is longer. If I were looking for a capable chopper that is hiker friendly I think you already have your knife. My favorite hiker friendly larger knives are, in order, (1) SFNO (2) Camp Tramp (3) SoD (4) Ratweiler & (5) Chopweiler.

It has been so long since the Swamp released a SR101 blade, I'd hang on to the Ratweiler. It may be rarer than some Busses one day. Besides, it's a great knife as it is. I know that mine will out chop my SARsquatch.

Just to muddy the waters, I had a SHE and Chopweiler that fit in the same kydex sheath, so you might not need another sheath if you went that route.

FWIW, I sold the SHE and kept the CW.

Easiest to get. NM SFNO.

Closest in design. SH-E without a doubt.

I couldn't find a side-by-side of the two knives, but here they are in sheaths. Both fit a Spec-Ops large quite nicely. From the left, SH-E is the second knife, and the Chopweiler is the third knife.

They are both in this pic. Chopweiler is in the middle of the table (just above the fillet knife), and the SH-E is just under the butt of the fillet knife.

From pictures, it appears the SH-e is full ht grind. The Chopweiler is 3/4 saber. Slight more blade heavy?

SR101 has 95% of the performance of INFI at 50% of the cost. So it is hard to justify upgrading as a straight value proposition.

Having said that, if you want to scratch that itch, then get the NMSFNO that is available now, either directly or pick up a user off the Exchange. A SARSquatch can be had for less, but is not as choppy as a Chopweiler.

My biggest concern is the atypical handle on the Chopweiler. I really like it. I've never seen the same handle on a Busse. The Ergos are close, but they don't have the hump in back like the chopweiler handle does.

They're not easy to get, but there are a few older Busses with a similar handle, including the EU17, some Terror Monkey variants, the Ripper and the STripper. I've attached a few pics (If anyone wants me to take them down, just let me know. Only the regular EU is mine.)

They aren't easy, but if you love the handle, it can't hurt to look...
