I am in the military and want buy a new knife for an uncomming deployment. Which Busse would you recomend? Why did they change the hadle from straight to slightly curved?

Bushmaster,
Welcome to the Busse Forum, glad you stopped by. :D

If you give us a little info, ie intended use, amount you're willing to spend. We can probably give you a little better info.

However, if you are going to be using it for general utility on your deployment, I would suggest a Natural Outlaw. Great blade, easy to carry and will attack big jobs with a fury. Its the perfect combination of large and small blades ;):D

Stay safe on your deployment.

Sorry, forgot all about the second part of your question. ;)

The change of handles came about after Jerry's hand injury. He realized that some input from a orthopedic doctor could proof valuable in designing a knife. The new handles are more ergonomically balanced to reduce fatique when using the knife for extended periods. They may take a minute or two to get used to, but once you do they are very comfortable to use.

Hope this helps.

Welcome aboard Bushmaster:D

I second Eric's recommendation that Natural Outlaw should cover a majority of tasks in almost any environment. It is the smallest of the Busses I would want if I had to use a knife to chop or prepare wood for fires, yet it performs a lot of the smaller knife oriented tasks so well that you'll only need a small folder to pick up the slack.

In addition to Eric's comment on the handle mods, the Natural Outlaw is the best balanced of the three larger Busses that have this handle.
It literally dissapears in your hand:D

Bushmaster, Welcome aboard.

Much depends on your intended uses, but for general soldiering and utility work afield I recommend the Natural Outlaw. It is my most often used Busse. It's just about as useful as a Steel Heart but more manageable for the little things that you sometimes have to do with a bigger knife. I would carry it in conjuncion with a good folder for very light slicing chores, the Natural Outlaw gets my vote.

As for the "E" handles: what Eric said.

Godspeed and Happy Hunting.

Welcome to the Busse forum, Bushmaster. The Natural Outlaw
is a great knife, but I wouldn't overlook the Satin Jack!!:D
Smaller, lighter, faster!! Great all around knife.

Hi Bushmaster,
Welcome.
As an Ex-military man that was in the feild all the time, I would have loved to have had the Satin Jack.
I was stuck in a combat Engineer unit and use a knife a lot.
What I carried was a 5" blade pilots survival knife. It did every thing I needed and then some.
It did break a few times by the time I got out, bit it was a great size.
The Satin Jack is made from a steel that Jerry designed, it is SO... much tougher that the knife I had and will perform so much better.

And remember, in this new world order of being PC... the Satin Jack blends in well.
It also has a straight handle.
You can cook, clean, cut C4, pry, dig, play chicken, build a shelter, ect, with a 6" blade.
I have them all, the SJ is my fav.......

If you are able to get to a show and handle both, by all means do so. The Satin jack may fit your bill, with its traditional styling, but the Natural Outlaw is, as several have said, a nice balance of a bigger blade capabilities in a medium blade length.

Either way, you won't go wrong.

By the way, welcome to the forums.

I would have to suggest either the SJ of the NO. Either way, you're getting a great knife. How to decide? The NO is heavier, it can chop better, but it probably won't penetrate quite as well. It works well as a small chopper, but will do well on other tasks as well. The SJ has a smaller aspect ratio (width of the blade, between the edge and the spine), is lighter, faster, and will probably penetrate better. However, the SJ is no slouch at chopping, either. Both are beefy knives. I agree with thatmguy that, if you can, you should go to a show and handle both of them. That may be the most important factor of all.

But seriously, you can't go wrong with either one :D .
