which came first

Did the Sodbuster with the black & Stainless come first ,or did the yellow come first?

If you are asking about Case Sodbusters, the full size (2138) with black handles and CV (carbon) blade was first in 1967. Then came the 2138SS in stainless along with the 2138LSS, the 2137, and the 2137SS all in black handles and all in 1970.

Case made some yellow handled Sodbusters as special factory order knives in the late 1980's. That was the first time Case used yellow handles on the Sodbuster. The yellow Sodbusters did not become part of the Case standard product line until the mid 1990's.

So the traditional yellow handled soddie is 10 years old??

I will have to check in my Case catalogs later to find the exact year but IIRC the 3137 was introduced in 1995 or 1996. They also offered the 3138 for several years from the late 90's to the early 2000's. The 3137 and the 3137 SS are still in the line.

As far as other brands, Eye Brand was making yellow sodbusters in the early 70's and probably earlier than that.

Case was the first US manufacturer to offer the sod buster pattern. Case may have even been the company that created the name Sod Buster for the pattern.

IIRC, Eye Brand developed the Sodbuster pattern, though they did not call it that.

I havent been interested in american patterns before I got internet due to lack of information untill after year 2000 but I always thought that the sodbuster was a real old pattern.
knifeaholic. I bow myself in gratitude. This kind of unexpected knowledge is realy interesting to get.
For most of us here its a great fortune that people with wast knowledge about knifes take part in our diskussions. Nothing beats raw information when its asked for or needed.

I remember that we had this discussion some time back. The original "sodbuster" knife is supposed to have Eastern European origins. The pattern was first marketed as a "folding butcher knife" in the 1800's by in Germany. Case's version is fairly new.

God Bless

So if this is the case (pardon the pun) the Kissing Crane Mule may be one of the more historically authentic ones out there?
