Hello everyone - - I saw a few references online to Camillus brand knives now being made in Spain. (I considered posting this in the Camillus forum, but thought that's collector orientated toward the US knives so posted here. Please move if the other forum is more appropriate.) - I guess someone bought certain design and name rights ?
Could you please tell me what models of Camillus knives are involved. Is it all of their products ? - - Sorry if this has been answered before, I did a search and didn't come up with anything useful. All the best, - - -

Camillus is out of business. That's why we have a collector's forum, as for Schrade, also out of business. The Schrade name was bought up by a company making "Schrade" knives in China. I haven't heard of "Camillus" knives being made since the company folded, though.

I think I might as well move this to the collector's forum, since they would be likely to know.

Hmmmm - - did a little more searching & found links on "the other forum" where guys mentioned a company called American Tactical Imports forming "Camillus Blades USA". Also they mentioned bringing goods into Spain by a company there called Ombu, an importer of flashlights. The examples of the new 'Camillus' knives they owned had nowhere on the box or knife "Made in Spain" just "patented" & "Spain" on the box. They speculated that they were actually knock-offs from Taiwan or from China. <sigh>
Who knows what the story is. - - Maybe someone on this forum will post more on the topic.

Made in China by patent pirates.
Not nearly as good a knife as the real Camillus ones made in Taiwan.

Taylor is putting the Camillus name on some of his junk, too. Nostalgia merchandising brands are not of interest to collectors. Discussion of Taylor brands goes in General Knife Discussion.
Let’s see if we can find the right forum …

Wow - bounced back in forth between two different forums by two different moderators in less than a day ! Seems that the new owners of the tradenames are accomplishing their objective of confusing people. :grumpy: I ask because Ive seen "Camillus" in various online ads and were trying to determine if they were some of the old stuff - (which I prefer), the items that might have been sold off at their auction when they closed, something actually newly built in Spain, - - or something built in China (and personally I'm not interesting in buying the latter - hard to avoid it nowadays & got enough of that already). - - - Guess I could just stick with Case for awhile !

Cutlery's designs to live on

Two American knife companies bought tooling, equipment and drawings at this week's auction of Camillus Cutlery and plan to begin making knives based on the defunct factory's patterns.

Knives made from Camillus' patterns will appear either this year or early next year in the catalogs of the Ontario Knife Co., in Franklinville, Cattaraugus County, and Bear & Son Cutlery Inc., of Jacksonville, Ala., their executives said Friday.

They will not, however, have the Camillus name. Acme United Corp. of Fairfield, Conn., paid $185,000 at a auction Tuesday for the Camillus' name, Web site, trademarks, brand names and patents.

Bear & Son owner Ken Griffey Jr. not the famous ballplayer said the Camillus knife patterns fill a niche for people who want to own an "old-timey" knife.

Bear and Ontario Knife bought the majority of the former knife plant's tooling, said Nick Trbovich Jr., president and chief executive of Ontario and chairman chief executive of its sister company Queen Cutlery in Titusville, Pa. Both companies are owned by Servotronics Inc., of Elma.

Camillus Cutlery closed in February and the contents of the factory were sold at auction this week to repay its debt.

Hi guys, I'm the owner of USA Mountain Sports.com. I just wanted to comment on the Camillus Heat. It's made in Spain now, not in Asia and the quality is as good as the previous version other than the blade steel. They changed the blade steel from AUS-8 to 440 Stainless. All in all its a great knife, one of my favorites in fact. It's nice and snappy and opens smoother than the SOG's.

Hello, I am Joe Byrd, the Public Relations and Advertising person for Taylor Brands LLC. One of the above statements is very inaccurate, I wish to give information to correct the statement.

Taylor Brands has never produced any product with the Camillus name, or have they ever been a licensee of Camillus.

Taylor Brands has manufactured cutlery in Johnson City, Tennesse and at their distribution center in Kingsport, Tennessee. They currently own 2 facilities off shore that manufactures some of their product lines. So when you see a Schrade or any of the Schrade brands it is actually made by the owner of the trademarks in their factories.

Some of the current product lines are made in the US and Taiwan and China.

Thank you

Joe Byrd

This all gets a bit confusing to say the least. - -

I posted about a replaceable blade 'boxcutter' type tool in another thread recently that I really liked - called the Camillus Crossfire. (I know its not an actual knife, but might illustrate the point). - - The design was from Blackie Collins . Very light weight and good ergos in the hand. I bought it quite awhile ago, before the company went under. I wanted to get a few more of them and found some online. I thought I was buying a made in USA Camillus NY product. When they arrived, I see that they are made in China. - - - I lost the box on the original Crossfire. So, I have no idea if they were always made in China or not. The blades on the original were marked "USA", the new ones have no markings and aren't as thick. There is more side-to-side play in the ones I recently bought than in the old one. The spring on the new one doesn't seem as strong as on the old. But, the little door that holds the spare blades closes more securely than the old one. There are tiny differences on the outside appearance of the new ones to the old, places where they differ in whether they have a gloss or matte finish. From outside appearanes they are extremely close.
So I still don't know if this was from the Camillus NY company (contract built in China), something from the recent auction, or something made by an entirely new company using the Camillus name. I looked at store shelves in Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears - - every boxcutter they had (including those branded 'Stanley' and 'Craftsman') were made in China. - - - Hope we don't forget completely how to manufacture anything. - - -
