Which Case Knife is this?

Hi,

I came across this knife and I'm trying to figure out which Case knife it is.

The blade is marked Case XX, so I assume it is from 1940-1964?

The handle material is super thick. It is 3/4" wide, at least. Can you tell me the material? Stag?

Blade is a little over 3 inches and there is only one.

I've looked around to see if I can identify the model but I'm not having any luck.

Any comments are appreciated.

Thanks!

Sorry Indyknife but I have to agree that knife was not made by Case. Whoever installed that shield must have been drunk.

It was most likely made from parts of other knives. The quality of the workmanship shows that, besides the cobbled together patterns. The scales do not fit, the blade pin is poor, and the shield was not installed properly. Also, the blade looks like a large stockman main blade, and the handle looks like a trapper. Interesting.

I do believe it is a Case. Earlier ones had pinned shields and they often have very thick bone.

It's showing a lot of shrink from the bolsters too, either kept in an ultra dry environment (but the stag is oddly shiny yet white..) or else it's been hafted really rather poorly. My feeling is veering towards Frankenknife also....

Looking at the pinning, and the blade pivot, it seems very clear to me that the knife has been "reworked" in some way. I am not an expert and could be wrong, but no amount of wear could cause those pins to look like that, or necessitate amateur re-pinning, while leaving the blade so comparatively full. I think the blade is not original, and probably the covers are not either. (Otherwise why re-pin the shield?) Seems like a frankenknife.

As everyone else has said... Not a real Case knife. Made from some real parts, but cobbled together. You would not see that poor quality from the Case factory.

Ummmm, NO. The knife has been put together, the bone is stag and Case neverput stag on a knife that looked like that. Yes their shields were pinned but Not inlet like that.

Thank you all for your comments. This knife, indeed, is poor quality. The badge is even worse than the pictures, I can spot glue around it. Nevertheless, I was dumb enough to buy it because it was priced cheap enough. I looked through Levine's and a Case Knife Book that I have and could not find anything like it. Lesson learned.

On the flip side, I'm trying to figure out what to do with it next. The blade seems legit, or I could just keep it as is and use it extensively. Open to any other ideas, if any of you have any.

Thanks again,
Steve

If not, why not try a bit of your own modding?

I'd agree with this. If you like the knife as-is go ahead and use it like you stole it. If you don't, rip that sucker apart and see if you can do better. There's no collector value to be lost, so why not? Worst case scenario is it doesn't work out and you send it in to one of our resident modders to fix it up right.

Why not buy a rough rider DIY picketknife kit from smokey mountain knife works for 6$ and use that blade In it

Hi Steve. The blade is good, if the action is ok you Might be able to pop the shield and grind the stag down to a nice clean area to re inlet the shield. It Could be thick enough to pull that off. It will make a great user either way.

Best regards
