Hey Guys, New to the forums here and wanted to get some opinions from some knowledgeable knife people on here as regards to sharpening. So long story short I've gotten addicted to sharpening, don't ask me why but anyway, I have been using a cheap 30$ combination waterstone with 1k and 8k on it. I have managed to get a decent edge on pocket knives/kitchen knives where I can cut paper clean and easy.

So here is where my question lies. I have heard so much about how great chosera stones are from various sources and am looking to get one. I would like the whole set but they are just too expensive for me right now so I was just planning on buying one but I am not sure which route to go. I debating between the 1k or 3k chosera. Keep in mind I have the 1k/8k cheap combi stone. My goal is to be able to create shaving sharpness on my knives. I also have a strop coming in soon ill start to use. Any advice from you guys is greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

If you only get 1 chosera stone then make it the 3k. It's the recommended finishing stone for most all cutting tasks by Naniwa and for good reason. The 3000 Naniwa Professional (new name for the Chosera) yields a near perfect cutting edge with a very nice balance of toothy and polished that offers smooth and controlled cutting, it would also help greatly between the 1k and 8k oh already have. That said, I would recommend the 1k as a medium stone and the Atoma 400 for coarse work and lapping of the waterstones. I say that because the Naniwa Pro stones will quickly show their advantage over the stones you have now and you will want more of these great stones.

As for sharpness, you should have a shaving edge off the 1k, work on making a sharp edge with the 1k and the edge will progressively get better as you use finer grits. If you NEED the 8k to produce a shaving sharp edge then your technique is to blame.

Jason, Thanks for the info. I can really appreciate advice coming from someone who knows what they are talking about. I'll probably end up getting the 3000 and then strop from there.

another quick question, do these chosera stones tend to last quite a while as well?

Yes, they are hard and slow wearing. I have used my 3k a fair amount and it's only worn maybe 1/16in. These stone will last the average user many years, if not a lifetime.

If you want a edge to work, 1k is enough. Even Chosera 800 is magnified.
800 removes more material and polished almost equal.
3000 leaves an impressive edge, for exposure.
