Im in the market for an emerson commander and im having trouble deciding what version to order the Mini or normal?
im used to carrying my BM940 and trying to decide which will fit me best
any input would be appreciated thanks

The Mini Commander will have about the same blade length and little longer handle than your 940. Also a little heavier. The regular will dwarf it. The Micro Commander is an option too.

I have the Mini and it suites me just fine.

Big fan of the standard Commander here. Also have a Super Commander when I suspect I could be attacked by saplings.

So in your opinion, the Super Commander would be the best for self-defense against sapling attacks? hmmm...I don't have any Commanders yet, might have to look into them!

I recall seeing an UBR on the Exchange not too long ago...

EDIT: Oh yeah! Right! The initial question.
I really like the standard size Commander. Keep in mind that it is not a small knife (about 9" overall). With the size of my paws, its great. Don't think a Mini would fit me, but everyone is different. This is why Emerson makes the same model in so many different sizes. Its great, it covers everyone from Tiny Tim to Uncle Jethro.

From your comparison with the other blade, i'd suggest the Mini Commander. See how it works for you. Not the right size? You can return it, or flip it on here for a different size.

Made me think of this vid from last year, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw6bP0TT29w.

Anyway, I really like the overall Commander design but I need just a bit more handle for my big hands so, as much as I really like the regular-size Commander, I prefer the larger Super Commander. No matter what, you can't go wrong with an Emerson Commander design -- no matter what size you choose.

I can see what you mean by needing more handle. Maybe a SF Super Commander is in my future.

The Commander is a versatile blade, you won't be disappointed in the mini or regular. I had a chance to hold an UBR before and the thing is literally a folding Bowie knife, HUGE, but still felt good in the hand, but not pocket friendly for my frame. I settled on a regular Commander and its just right.

Just picked up a Super Commander. Bad a-- knife. Solid and sharp (suckers already bit me) Now I'm torn between my SATU and Super.

Kingslan, I've had my eye on a Satu for some time and haven't taken the plunge. I REALLY like my Super Commander though, and your statement may have put me over the edge ...

Out of the 13 EKI knives I own, the standard Commander with wave (I have 2) is my most carried Emerson blade...second most carried would be a waveless CQC-7. The standard size Commander is the right size for an EDC IMO.

Why is the commander so popular when you have so many more useful blades in the Emerson lineup?

serious question. I am not trying to put it down.

Interesting question.

My Mini Commander was the gateway into knives and especially Emersons.

My brother had a couple of Gerbers for nearly 2 years and let me hang on to one for a few months. It was adequate. Solid and quick but wouldn't take an edge at all. He researched for about 2 weeks for an upgrade and decided on a Mini 15. He bought it in late October of 2010 but it was on back order so it was going to take a few months to receive. Anyways he showed me the Emerson website and a few videos of the knives (the waving caught my eye:cool:) and I had to agree that they looked pretty sweet. He asked which one I liked, which was a hard decision, but based on aesthetics I chose the Mini Commander. He was kind enough to get me one that Christmas and it came in early January 2011. It was a bit stiff at first as they all are but man was that thing sturdy. Amazing grips and ergos and scary sharp. That was what a knife was supposed to be.

After carrying the knife for a few months and picking up a Kershaw Select Fire (no way I was going to bring an Emerson to NYC) I learned the limitations of that blade shape. While it will work for nearly anything a pocket cutting tool is needed for, I found that I prefer a more pointed blade with a little less belly. So I probably wont be picking up another Commander. However, I wont ever get ride of the one that I have and after it gets a new lock it will be going right back into the rotation.

Ps. My bro's Mini 15 came in 2-3 weeks after mine.:p
