I'm thinking I'd like to buy some diamond stones for sharpening. I think I prefer it to a guided system. I'm looking at DMT, sharpal, and atoma. Most of those have a variety from 300 to 1200. Any suggestions on brands or grit? I have a variety of knives from cheap steel to super steels. I'm not new to sharpening, just wanting a good quality product. I have a sharpmaker and various flat stones now. Thanks for any help.

I have the dmt set of diamond stones. 300, 600, and 1200 I think. I have zero regrets. They were affordable and work great

The diamond matrix stones made by D Diemaker are great. They come in a 1" x 6" size for the Edge Pro sharpener. I believe he makes some other sizes as well and I am not sure what system they would be used with or by hand.

Own a set of DMT, Ultra Sharp, Atoma, and a Sharpal, among a few other of the dirt cheap no name diamond plates. Had good experiences with the Ultra Sharp and Sharpal, great experiences with the Atoma, mixed with the DMT.

The Ultra Sharp and Sharpal are more or less the same in quality, at least the ones I have. No grit contamination on either. Sharpal arguably a better value as you get two grits on their double sided plate, though Ultra Sharp has more grit selection, from 300-3000. Sharpal currently only offers the one double sided plate afaik. A 325/1200. The Sharpal 325 felt way more coarse than the Ultra Sharp 300 from what I remember, but then the Ultra Sharp 1200 feels more coarse than the Sharpal 1200.

Atoma I think is the standout among all diamond plates due to their design. The diamonds are all adhered in small raised clusters in an even pattern across the surface. Leaves a really nice and even scratch pattern. You can get the full stone which costs the same as a DMT, or you can get the slightly cheaper replacement "blade" then just use your own backer which is what I did.

The DMT's I own and have owned (dia-sharp models) all suffered from grit contamination. As such, they do need a bit more break in to get rid of all the too large particles for the stated grit. Once broken in though they do work well. I particularly like the DMT coarse the most as it provides a nice toothy edge yet you can still do light reprofiling off it too. DMT offers the most grit variety out of all the mentioned brands.

I've used DMTs for decades with no complaint. I clean mine with BreakFree CLP, which does a terrific job of lifting off the embedded swarf. If you go with the DMTs it's worthwhile to pick up the DMT DuoBase, too. It holds the hones at the perfect height.

I’ve had a couple of UltraSharp diamond plates (300 & 600 grit) for several years and have been very happy. I sharpen cheap kitchen knives, decent ones, and things up to and including M390 and thereabouts. I like a steel that keeps an edge, but I don’t want to have to work on one knife for hours to get an edge.

I don’t recall why I chose Ultrasharps over the DMTs, unfortunately, because the DMTs get a lot of good press. I like my Ultras, but I don’t think you would go wrong with DMT. I have no experience with any of the others.

I am new sharpening with diamond plates, but feel very lucky, I purchased some very cheap plates om Amazon, and they have worked for me super! Four passes on the 400 grit and three passes on the 1000 grit and one pass on the ceramic side that is claimed 8000 grit, then a quick strop and my knife was just about as perfect it can get!
