Which Dozier for Hunting?

I have already made one post starting to narrow down my hunting knife selection, and this is my next one. Although I don't know if I will ultimately want to shell out the cash that a dozier knife demands, I definitely want to keep them in the running at this point. Other than the price, the only problem with the dozier knives is that I love so many of his designs.

Below are the favorites. I guess I just don't know how to decide among these. It looks like they are all basically the same in terms of construction and materials and basic size, so it looks like it is a matter of which design best suits my purposes.

I want a knife to use for many years as a general hunting knife. Deer and antelope and wild boar are definitely in the mix, but also (hopefully) larger game like elk in the future (here I am assuming that it is fine to try to have one knife for elk/moose and smaller game like deer). I'd also like the knife to be able to serve as decent survival/general purpose knife if need be.

Let me know what you think!

If you use your knife for dressing and nothing else, with K-19 Pro and the KS-1 Master, you're getting a lot of blade. I'd go with those. Depends on whether you prefer finger grooves or not.

All of the above will serve as general purpose knife. The scandinavian grind on the bushcraft has an edge over the others though.

A note of the price: The way DK makes their D2 and kydex sheaths, the knife is a great value.

For a Dozier, you're looking at a 12-month+ wait. At least.
There's a KS-1 in the "Featured Inventory" that is available right now.
My bet is that it'll be gone before the day is over though.

Any of those knives would be fantastic for what you want. You can't go wrong with Dozier and they are worth every penny. I know you don't like paying for names:rolleyes:but in this case for sure you aren't. You would be getting one of the finest knives available. Dozier is that good.

Yeah that's what I'm hearing... I didn't think the wait could be that long. I thought I would be okay for my hunting trip in December...

I have heard that you can sometimes buy them from vendors? Also, any other custom makers out there who are comparable to dozier, such as ingram?

The Bark River hunting knives are right up there.

When you clean animals what type of knife do you like? What type of knife have you used so far and what about it did you and did you not like? When you clean game what do you plan on doing yourself and what do you plan on having someone else do?

Skinning? Gutting? Quartering? De-boning?

What do you expect you will need different in a knife for a bigger animal like an elk?

I have used whatever folding pocket knife is in my pocket for most animals I have processed. I do everything myself down to de-boning and grinding hamburger. A little 3 inch Spyderco Native has processed quite a bit of meat and been used from start to finish. So basically what I'm saying is anything will work, get what you think will work best for you and what you like a knife to do.

I'm probably just throwing gasoline on the fire, but ...

I really like the KS-3 Pro Guide. So I bought one.:)

It can pretty much do anything. Well, except chop.

Watch the Dozier featured inventory (especially on Mondays) and keep an eye on the purveyors as well
AZCK is one of them.

Take a look at the Slim Outdoorsman as well.

Money well spent :)

Just for field dressing and skinning I really like my K-16.It is a fine knife as long as you know how to properly dress an animal.I mean like cutting cartlige at joints instead of chopping through bone or prying joints apart.

If I wanted a hunting-general purpose-survival I would get a KS-3 Professional Guides Knife.

Dozier knives do what a knife should do best "CUT".They do it better than any other I have ever used. However if you want to beat, chop, and pry I would suggest something else.My YPK is ground thin so it cuts well, sharpens easily with a DMT,and stays sharp a long time.

A.G.Russell sometimes has Doziers in stock.

Whatever you get I would suggest the Wilderness sheath.

The first one on the list. For a more all around utility and skinner the second one on the list.

But what do I know I never skinned anything besides rabbits and squirel in Lousyana.

My opinion anyway.

The Master Skinner is a great all purpose hunting knife for the purposes you mention (deer, boar, elk, etc.) especially if you like a handle the fills the hand.

AG Russel always has a good selection of Doziers available for delivery.

Even when not in stock, his lead time is 3-4 months.

For a general purpose knife along with skinning, I always liked the KS-1 Master Skinner because of the thicker blade.

K19 and K2 are my favorites..

K2 is their best seller..

Might want to check out a Cross model one..

KS-1 Master Skinner is my favorite pattern. Beefy, comfortable knife with an incredible hollow grind.

While there are some great hunting knives made by others....Bob's hollow grinding and D2 heat treat won't be found anywhere else.

Good luck in your search, you really can't go wrong with any of the patterns.
