Which Drill Bit is Best?

I guess it depends on your outlook. Any of those will work. I personally suggest getting a set of HSS bits and either go with carbide or reamers in your most used sizes like 1/8" and 1/4".

I go with cobalt. I was drilling some hole in ATS-34 with HSS got a little way through and burnd up. Tride to finish the hole with titanium.... same thing. Cussing, went to the hardware store got a cobalt drill and went right through. Used cobalt every since.

I buy stub-length cobalt bits from Travers.

There is very little that you will need to drill in knifemaking that a stub-length bit won't reach through...and the shorter bit won't want to walk like a longer one will.

Even buying packs of 10 from Travers is cheaper than buying a few HSS from the local hardware store. But I take good care of my bits and use a good cutting fluid and they last a very long time.

They cost more, but in my opinion are worth every penny.

Cobalt for everything except for Al. Aluminum bonds chemically to cobalt, and that shortens the life of the bit. I use my cheap bits on aluminum.

You can make cobalt drills start and cut freer by thinning the point properly. It takes a fine edge on a wheel and good steady hands to do it though.
You come to the web of the drill and keep the same angle as the web and cut in just a bit on each side evenly.

A trick for cutting brass without the drill grabbing is to slightly flatten each side of the cutting edge making it a zero degree instead of a positive cutting edge.
