Which Edge Pro package?

I've about decided to buy the Edge Pro Apex.I've read a lot of old threads and am sorry if I missed the answer.I would like to ask your opinion of what to get with the kit.Would I be set with a 220 320 and 800 grit stones or should I get the 120 grit, tape blanks, ceramic steel and polishing tapes?

At present I don't need to reprofile any blades.I would just like to know how sharp the 800 grit will get a blade without polishing. Also I've never really used a steel so I might do more harm than good if it isn't explained well in the instruction book.

I've used a Lansky 15 years ago and liked it but I hear the new ones aren't as good.If I bought a Lansky it wouldn't be long before I would get the Edge Pro anyway so I might as well go ahead and get one now.

Thanks for any advice.

This would fit better in the "Maintenance, Embellishment, and Tinkering" Forum. You'll get more answers there, I think.

I've had an Apex for several months now. My set does have the 120 grit stone, tapes, and blanks.

If you aren't going to be doing any rebeveling, I think you'll be OK with the 220, 320, and 800 grit stones. The Edge Pro is pretty quick at what it does. I keep the 220 stone mounted in the arm ready to use, because that's where I start most of the time.

My usual progression is 220 > 320 > 800 > Sharpmaker U/F rods for polishing. That's kinda rare, though. Most of my edge work consists of weekly touchups to our EDCs and I just use my Sharpmaker for that. I haven't used the round ceramic or the polishing tapes & blanks at all, yet. And if you do get into rebeveling later, you can always order just a 120 stone from Ben Dale.

I would recommend getting the 120 grit stone. Forget re-beveling, merely making slight adjustments for bevel uniformity can take a long time.
