I'm considering getting an emerson cqc 11 or 12 for SD. anybody have any experience between these two? I don't plan to have it clipped on so the wave will be rendered useless. How is opening with the thumb disk? Is the lock strong enough? HOw does this compare to the chinook III?

well, considering the '12 isnt a liner lock (its a frame lock) i wonder if ya know WTF, right off the bat.

some of the best fighting knives in the world are liner locks (ie emerson customs, crawford customs) and there is nothing at all wrong with a well fitted well designed liner lock.

that said i would pick the '12 myself, its my current fav EKI, its plenty strong, and i very much prefer it to the chinook 1,2 or 3.

"I have nothing good to say about liner locks. So I'd pick the Spydie back lock right off the bat." Yeah good thing that wasn't his question. I would also have to go with the cqc12 the lock is rock solid

I got a Super 7. It's superb for SD IMO. Waves open every time. fast in the hand, and the blade is just the right size. rides light in the pocket for it's size too. After I stropped it, it's the sharpest knife (or anything including razorz) I own. I have Striders, BM, Spyderco, ect.. I handles a new CQC 15. I haven't bought it yet, but it's next on my list, check that out. It's like a Commander and a CQC-7 morphed. And F%$# what they say about liner locks. A well done liner lock is as good as any. Terzuola comes to mind. Unless your putting your knife in a vice and purposely trying to bounce and twist to destroy it to disengage it, I'm sure you'll be fine. The only time you have to worry is sometimes with middle of the road knives like CRKT and such. The liner tends to be too thin and doesn't engage the tang properly. But my Emersons and my Striders are as strong or stronger than anything. Plus the liner lock makes it sooo smooth. There is a reason experienced professional knife makers still use them, or exclusively use them.

Oh yeah, your question. The CQC-12 is the fricken BOMB. I think it might be one of my favorite knives of all time. I had one, sold it. Now i want it back. It's sooo smooth opening. It carries great. It's just neat. it , in a weird way I guess, reminds me of morphing my CQC-7 and an SMF. I guess because of the TI. The blade is insanely SHARP, and just the right size for SD to hit the spots you want to hit, without being to bulky to carry. It's not bulky at all. It's a slick knife. Perfect ergo's great weight. Strong lock. For me, these knives are as close as it gets to the perfect knives for SD, Thats the only reason I buy knives like this anyway. I'm a chef so I have specialty knives for cooking. But these knives are so good you can't really miss for SD. It's to the point that it's just personal preferance for ergos and esthetics. Good luck:D

thanks killerskill. i'm in the process of looking for the best price for the cqc 12. can't wait to get it.

I personally like the cqc10. Has a wonderful fit in the hand, is decent size but not huge. This would give you versitility in its use. Yes, it is a liner-lock but all Emersons that are L/Ls are well made to be sure.

I don't think you can go wrong in buying the chinook3 or the cqc-12. The 12 is a nicer knife in my opinion, and it opens smooth with the thumb disk. But, it cost about 100 bucks more too.

we all make mistakes (well, most of us anyway lol)............

dont sit quietly too long, bud.

You should check out the CQC-10. It isn't as "sculpted" as the other Emersons but the handle is the most ergonomic. It is a great cutter and fits your hand like a glove. If you find a CQC-10 2005 production get it! It has a thicker liner on the lock side.
