Ok so my friend has an emerson commander that is really nice and he let me use recently, and that sparked my interest in Mr. Emerson's knives
The most likely canidates so far are the commander, cqc13, and the cqc15 they all are so nice what one should I get first? Also stone was or black coating and combo or not?

Im new to emersons too and dont know much about them yet. How are you at sharpening? Some of the emersons have a strong recurve that might be challenging for new sharpeners. Heck I still suck at shRpening at recurves and do t but them because of that.

i have actually gotten pretty good art sharpening them b/c my friend makes me sharpen his commander

I'd go with a plain edge version. Coatings in my opinion are for cosmetics but their Satin/Stonewashed finish is beautiful! from those three I'd choose the 13. Blade shape is awesome and should be easier to sharpen than the Commander of the 15. The 15 might be a little weird as it has a slight tanto. The Commander would be my second choice.

hey thank you for the reply I do think I will be ordering a cqc13 first as I absolutely love Bowie style blade, I am sure the other two won't be too far behind it,

If u like the commander size I would get either the commander a 15 or a roadhouse. Black blades will scratch but I like a black blade over a silver blade anytime.

What will you be using it for? I personally have plain edges on all of my Emersons, but Mr. Emerson himself actually recommends always carrying a knife that has serrations, not only because they make quick work of fibrous material, but because if the knife ever starts to go dull, the serrations will still be able to cut things. All personal preference, plus maybe some consideration as to what you will use the blade for.

As far as coating goes, I have had several EKI knives with, and several without. Currently I only have 2 Emersons, a Stonewashed Mini-Commander and a Black Coated CQC7, and frankly, as beautiful as the SW finish is, I will probably be leaning towards more coated blades in the future. The baked on ceramic coating they use is really high quality, and holds up very well, except under fairly hard use (and to be honest, I actually LOVE the look of a coated Emerson once the coating starts to come off after taking many beatings). Nothing better than looking at your blade, and being able to see a reminder of all of the good times you've had with it, or all of the times it has helped you out in a pinch, or if you own one of those really original 6s or 8s, you know... the ones made for those with truly Bad Intent, well, the worn coating probably has even more exciting stories to tell.

As much as I like Bowie style blades, I think the 8 (which is definitely a pseudo-bowie/skinner blade shape) would be my first choice over a 13. The design of the 8 is truly classic Emerson, and I am of the school of thought that the 6, 7, 8, and Commander are the Emerson knives that built Emerson (and I guess in a way the A-100 as well, since it bears a striking similarity to the Viper MV-1)

I am inclined to agree with doc on this one. The CQC-8 is a very useful design, that lends itself well to most tasks. That said, any Emerson is a good buy in my books. ;)

Hard to go wrong, but without knowing what you would do with it, I have to recommend a classic blade shape, like the CQC-13, over the Commander. I also prefer the stone-wash over a coated blade.

Nothing wrong with Emerson's coating, though, and I'm carrying my Commander these days. :)

Commander or 7 would be my pick. Both quintessential Emerson. Hell get both!
Blade shapes like the Commander's recurve or the CQC-7 chisel grind tanto take some practice, but I love them both. The Benchmade 975 was my first Emerson.

I've carried and used the 7, mini15, 13, and mini A100
The 13 is my favorite but it is the least practical to carry.
I think the mini 15 is my favorite overall for edc utility.
I'd love to get a horseman or a journeyman next.
I'd go with the 13 if you don't mind carrying a large folder.

Also if you plan on using the blade a lot I recommend the serrated blade.
I find it comes in real handy as the blade begins to loose its edge.
I send my knives to Emerson to sharpen them after trying on my own, especially the serrated ones.
And I prefer the stonewashed finish because its easier to clean and make look new after extensive use even though a beat up black blade does have a lot of character.

I love the commander. However, ever since I picked up a cqc10, I havent carried any of my other Emersons. If I had to start with my first Emerson today. I would start with the 8. Stronger tip than 13, belly to do wilderness application, great self defense design. Its easy to sharpen. I would get it with the dragons teeth.
