Which Emerson?

Howdy folks!

as y'all can probably ascertain, I'm poppin' in here to solicit advice and perception, any and all contributions would be appreciated, so...here goes...

A little over a year ago (seems like alot longer) I'd picked up an Emerson Commander and I'm sorry to say it was the biggest disappointment I'd ever experienced in knife purchasing. I realize that to many the $165 or so I spent on it was pocket change, but at the time I was workin' two jobs, one in hospital security, the other as an EMT and barely managing to make ends meet. The money I'd saved up to spend on that knife was a heck of alot to me at the time and I was really expecting a pretty special knife for what I was spending. Anyways to make a long story short what I got was an incredibly loose liner lock, a finish that came off easy, a blade that could never be adjusted right, and a black finish that just seemed incredibly delicate. I took it back to the store I'd bought it from a week later, no harm, no foul, done deal.

A little while afterwards I'd come in here to ask if I was the only person that had these problems, and basically uhmmmmm....managed to stir up a bit of a controversy (NOT MY INTENTION) In the end there were a couple of fine folks that basically told me I'd gotten a lemon, QC problems had been rectified if there ever were any, I should try out another Emerson some day. Well, I'm thinkin' the day has come. I mean an entire year has passed, I've changed, It doesn't seem like there's as much QC controversy, and it's time to basically friggin' get over it. After all, the Commander had alot of good points going for it. The Wave, the blade design, INCREDIBLY comfortable handle, and I HATE to use this term when it comes to things of metal, but it was just a flat out sexy lookin' knife.

So, here's my dilemma...I'm debating whether I want a waved CQC7, or if I wanna try another Commander.

Commander has the wide blade, comfy handle, good looks, curvaceous profile and it could be rather...therapuetic in regards to the last one I had that I was so disappointed with.

The CQC7 looks hell bent for stout, has a nice looking blade profile to it, and quite honestly....I think it's like the one that started it all, with the tactical folder trend. I remember drooling over them a LONG time ago when Benchmade was producing them. So, it's kinda like...traditional, and a bit of the knife I'd dreamed of but never gotten.

So, what are y'alls perspectives? Which one do you prefer for EDC, knocking through the woods, heavy use, etc?

Any input is appreciated! thanks!

Personally, I like the P-SARK. I have three reasons to back up my opinion.

1) Super comfy, Specwar style handle. This is my favorite handle of all the Emerson's. It fits my paw like the proverbial glove.

2) Refreshing blade style. It's not really a Wharncliff, and it's not really a hawkbill. It's a nice blend of both worlds, in my opinion. I find it extremely useful, day in, day out.

3) Wave- this speaks for itself.

Give it a try, I'm sure you'll like it.

RWS:

I too would advocate trying the PSARK. I carry both a PSARK and a Commander as my edc's both on duty and on 'civvy street'. I must say that although the Commander gets a lot of use, I use the PSARK even more!

Wire Edge has some very valid points to consider. If I can add one more, the blade style does not seem too aggressive to the "sheeple". I find that when I draw the Commander, I usually get wide-eyed looks from the populace. The PSARK normally does not. The blade configuration sets itself well for both daily cutting usage and qualifies as a deadly defensive tool.

Either way, you will not be disappointed. If you still work as an EMT, then take a close look at the SARK. I personally know of 13 EMT's that have converted to this excellent rescue tool.

Good luck!

Hmmm....The SARK wasn't really high on the "I want" list, but it seems to be pretty highly recommended, and it looks better every time I take a gander at it.

I'm currently doing volunteer EMS, and looking at going back into paid here in a couple of weeks. In all candor though, I'm already up to my neck in Rescue knives, so that's not a primary consideration, but on the other hand I'm always looking for something better too...and the sheeple factor, I reluctantly admit is a consideration. I'd already been thinking of getting a Lagriffe in the standard and whitewater versions to compliment whichever folder I got. Figured The WWR could be pretty a pretty hand little acessory in the field. Damn...maybe I need an SARK, a Commander AND a CQC-7....:D Restraint Mikey....restraint....

By the way, I've read the advertising about a Marine helicopter going down, the current issue military knife (AFO?) failing, thusly the SARK coming to life....is there any recommended sources where I can get a little more info on the topic? I do find myself intrigued, and wanting to learn more here.

Thanks again for all provided perceptions and info!

Mike

Personally I like the CQC7. Nice stout blade and I really enjoy how the handle fits my hand.

I too will highly recommend the PSARK.

For those that don't know or may be confused, the SARK and the PSARK are two similar, yet different knive models.

The SARK (Search and Rescue Knife) was developed with just that in ming. The hooked blade allows the blade to slide between harnesses, gear, clothing, seat belts, ect and the victim. The blunt tip keeps the rescuer from accidently stabbing or cutting the victim.

The PSARK (Police - Search and Rescue) is a spin off of the SARK design. A sharpened tip has replaced the blunt one to form a damn aggressive fighter. Brings a whole new flavor to the design. :D

But let's not forget the ever effective Commander. :D

I think it's like the one that started it all, with the tactical folder trend.

Me too. Whenever I think about the tactical knives, the posterchild is always the CQC7b. It looks good and its one tough knife.

Just wanted to say thank you all for the input, It's given me perspectives to consider that I never would have come into otherwise.

Right now, the grand plan is to buy a P-SARK and a SARK, and keep one for EDC, and such and the other of course will be used for EMS duty.

Of course, then I'm still looking for the waved CQC, and a Commander too, but I'll have to wait a bit, for these two...

Damn...post started off as "which knife?" and then it mutated into "WHICH KNIFE FIRST??!!" :D

haha. for some reason, i always thought the P in PSARK stood for "Pointy", not "Police" :)

If I were you I would try out the mini-commander. I have a fullsize that I don't carry cause it's not as convenient as the mini. Just so you know the Mini-comm is still bigger than the CQC-7's. Great knife. No Q.C. issues at all. I bought 2, one for me, the other for my girl. Both are perfect.

Go with the SARK I got one for a friend of mine who works EMT in Connecticut and he loves it, IT HAS SAVED LIVES!!! This guy actually uses his SARK daily it is a 2001 model so it has not had any QC problems. The sharp point version is a better idea if you work security also. My EMT friend uses the blunt tip version.

My 2 cents

IT WORKS!! IT WORKS!! THE DAMN THING WORKS!!!:D :D :D

You're probably aware now...I got my Emerson. Since vast majority indicated a SARK or P-SARK, and a few folks recommended a CQC-7 I did what any irrational hard headed knife nut would do......

I got the Commander.:o

I couldn't resist! I found a pre-owned one at the local B&M shop for like $125! This one locks perfectly tightly every time, has excellent grind lines, a hair popping edge, doesn't rub the liners, etc. Overall MUCH better than Commander #1 was.

I did look real closely at the SARK for the same price, but decided against it. I was more interested in a daily carry MAYBE tactical style than another rescue blade. I've already got more miscellaneous rescue/extrication blades than I could possibly use up in a life time.
(although if I ever end up as a Flight Medic one of the SARKs is going to be MANDATORY equipment.)

The SARK will probably be my next purchase, it'll just have to wait another month or so....:D

Overall, I'm a happy guy with my purchase, and DEFINITELY planning to own another Emerson or two.

thanks for the input! it IS VERY much appreciated! (even if I did wind up taking a different direction than suggested)

I said the same thing...

We've corrupted him :D
